jason parker reports in this review:
WeatherHow much crime? What are the neighborhoods like? What are the people like?
During a winter Anchorage averages about 75 inches of snow a year and gets about 16 inches of rain through out the whole year. Temperature wise during the winter goes from the teens to the thirties. During the summer it averages between the forties and the sixties with the occasional record breaking day in the eighties.Anchorage has big city crime. Drugs, alcohol, and gang related crime make it a city to be weary in. A man was shot in a bar a few years ago because he danced better than the man who shot him.Mountain View is considered a very bad neighborhood so is Spenard. The nicer parts of town are Campbell Park and University Lake Plaza.People can still be very friendly, recent laws have made it illegal to give money to people who pan handle and I've seen that cause people to be a little more weary of strangers. A majority of people in Anchorage are white with Asians, Native's and blacks making up the rest.
Downtown AreaRestaurantsSchoolsSingle life
The downtown shopping area is great. While tourism is big business there are still plenty of nice contemporary stores in the area.Bear Tooth and Moose's Tooth are the amazing pizza chain and brewery company that make up Anchorage. You can also get good seafood at Humpys and Cafe Paris has an amazing prime rib sandwich.Anchorage has problems with it's public school system, mainly overcrowding and crime. There are a few private schools in Anchorage.Men and women both have a good chance of meeting someone in Anchorage. Though I believe the odds are stacked on the women's side for who gets the most attention.
Noisetown comparison vs.Best hospitalTourist attractions
If you live near the international airport you will hear planes landing and taking off a majority of the day. The highway becomes a street once it enters Anchorage's city limits so noise is not so bad.Anchorage is unlike any city in Alaska. With it's 300,000 person population it's in a class all by itself. The best hospital in Anchorage is Providence. The Imaginarium in downtown has quite the video experience on the history of Alaska that is worth checking out. If your there during the winter a must see is the Fur Rendezvous Festival and the start of the Iditarod.
General comments
Anchorage is surrounded by beauty. You can turn 360 degrees and always see something surprising. Walking around downtown Anchorage you get a great feel for how life was in early Alaska.
