Kayla reports in this review:
WeatherHow much crime? What are the neighborhoods like? What are the people like?
In the summer Austin can be very hot and fairly humid due to the rivers and lakes surrounding it. About half of the residents love this and half hate it. During an Austin Spring it can be warm, cold, snowy, rainy, windy, essentially all weather patterns. The falls are short, but wonderful. Winters are usually mild, but recently Austin has had several ice/snow days due to Polar Vortexes.Austin definitely has a large homeless population and suffers from the sort of crimes that come along with this. During the winter, many homeless people will travel to Austin since it is warmer than say Detroit. This causes a lot of territory fights amongst the homeless population. I have seen some of these fights near I-35. However, the more affluent areas of Austin tend to have a stronger police presence. There also tend to be a lot of crimes associated with a university town: drugs, noise violations, DWI/DUI/PI, etc.Westlake, Tarrytown, Hyde Park, down town Austin, and any neighborhood off of FM 2222 are all very nice and wealthy neighborhoods. There are some very beautiful mansions built into the hills off of 2222. In my experience these neighborhoods are largely populated by caucasian people. The east side of Austin historically has been called the "bad part" of town, but due to heavy gentrification efforts it has become more developed in the last decade. Historically east Austin is where minorities live, but they are being pushed out because of gentrification projects.I find people in Austin to be very friendly. It's kind of a weird place, filled with all types of people, but generally you meet with more nice people than not nice people. I have had several experiences of strangers being kind to me in this city. Austin seems to be about 50%-60% white, possibly 30% hispanic, and 10% African American.
Downtown AreaRestaurantsSchoolsSingle life
Downtown Austin is full of wonderful restaurants, night life, and shopping. There are many famous bars and restaurants, with hotels located conveniently nearby. I have spent many days and nights enjoying all that downtown Austin has to offer..Texas Chili Parlor- a local place that is one of Quentin Tarantino's favorites
P.Terry's- a local burger place that has a wonderful secret sauce, and they only use the best ingredients.
Uchi+Uchiko- Top Chef contestant, Paul Qui, worked here, very popular locally.
Chuey's El Arroyo, & Trudy's are all very popular Tex-Mex restaurants.
The public schools in Austin vary depending on the neighborhood. The ones in the more affluent areas are of a high caliber.Austin has made many lists for being a good city for singles. There is a large night life scene, and the water attractions all over the city are great places to meet other singles.
Noisetown comparison vs.Best hospitalTourist attractions
I-35 can be noisy, but you will not hear too much if you live in a well insulated house. There are many music venues all over the city. Austin is called the "live music capitol of the world." Due to large music events like ACL, there can be music noise if you live in these areas.Austin is the biggest city in the surrounding area. Round Rock is a big suburb town, and is a bed room town for people that work in Austin. San Marcos is another university town about twenty minutes away, and strives to be a smaller version of Austin, but more on the conservative side. There are many wonderful small towns under an hour's drive from central Austin. The famous "Black's BBQ" is nestled in Lockhart, Texas, and well worth the drive.Seton Medical overall, but the Dell Children's Hospital is one of the best children's hospitals in the country if not the world. The University of Texas has many wonderful museums, the football games are always an event, SXSW and ACl always draw large crowds, you cannot go wrong with lake/river activities: paddle boarding, kayaking, boating, floating the river, etc. Many wonderful restaurants and shops along South Congress.
General comments
A blue oasis in a red state. There are hippies, artists, university students, politicians, entrepreneurs, families, different ethnicities, and religious groups in Austin. It makes for a wide and varied city with lots to do. For a city there are lots of green belts, and wonderful outdoor space that you do not find in every city in America.
