Weather | | How much crime? | | What are the neighborhoods like? | | What are the people like? |
Winters are cool, cloudy and rainy. There is a chance of flooding due to some roads not maintained by the city. Spring and summer are beautiful - 70 -80's during the day, sunny, cool nights 50's. | | The biggest crime is thievery. Since many of the homes are facing the water, cars and garages facing the streets are subject to theft. | | Bethel Island is just that - an island accessed by a bridge. The homes are a 50/50 mix of nice well maintained and shoddy. Mostly Caucasian working class with a small percentage of retired. There are about 40% of homes that are being remolded or have recently been finished. | | The people are very friendly, warm and likeable. This is a boating community and mostly 80% of the residents have a boat. They are always there to help if a boat is stuck or stalled or in trouble on the water. Neighbors are always looking out for one another. |

The downtown of Bethel Island is 1 street about 5 blocks long. It houses the Chamber of Commerce, a couple of restaurants, gas station, grocery store and of course, marine stores. | | There are a few local restaurants and yacht clubs. The Rusty Porthole is a fun lively lounge with a live band on weekends, holiday contests and friendly bartenders. | | The closest public school is in Antioch and Brentwood. They are very good schools from pre-school to high school. | | Not a very good atmosphere for singles. The town is majority married professionals or retirees. |
Noise | | town comparison vs. | | Best hospital | | Tourist attractions |
The most noise you will hear is the hum of boat engines as they putt by or blast of engines as they race by with water skiers. | | There is not a town very similar to this in the area. San Francisco is about an hour away as is Sacramento and Oakland. Bethel Island is closest to Antioch and Brentwood which are blue collar newer cities. | | The closest hospitals are in Antioch and Brentwood - Kaiser Permanente and John Muir Hospital. They are fairly new and have emergency facilities. | | The nicest place to visit is the marina where you house your boat and the San Joaquin Yacht Club. They have holiday parties, weekend boat trips for members and the cheapest drinks in town! |
General comments | | | | | | |
The town is very small, with a few businesses: grocery store, bars, restaurants, yacht club. You can be a regular at any one of the businesses after a couple of visits. They always remember your name. | | | | | | |
