Life in Bloomington, Minnesota

Bloomington Reviews Minnesota Message Board
City/State
Are you thinking of moving or relocating to Bloomington, Minnesota? Would you like to know what the quality of life is like living in Bloomington?
Rick Ellis reports in this review:
WeatherHow much crime? What are the neighborhoods like? What are the people like?
Located just south of Minneapolis, Bloomington's winters are cold and often frigid. While central Minnesota doesn't get as much snow as the northern part of the state, most winters include at least 40 inches of snow, with one or two storms that dump nearly a foot of snow on the ground. Summers are mild, with the temperature generally no higher than the mid 90s.Aside from the general minor crimes you would find in any suburban town, Bloomington has two major crime areas. The area around the Mall of America draws in millions of visitors and with those visitors come a lot of thefts from cars & hotels and other tourist-related crimes. The eastern edge of Bloomington is also a more dangerous area, with a lot of abandoned buildings and a persistant drug problem. The area around the Mall of America is very built up and surrounded by high-end hotels and office complexes. There aren't a lot of residential spots, but it is definately the commerce hub for the area. The are just south of MOA is comprised primarily of newer homes that can cost as much as $500,000. The residents are primarily - but not exclusively - white. The eastern half of Bloomington is older and many of the people living there work in one of the nearby hotels or offices. Much of the housing is either older houses or slightly rundown apartments. The residents tend to be non-white and primarily Hispanic. The area around the Mall of America is very tourist-driven and anyone in that demographic will feel right at home. The rest of Bloomington is primarily working class, with a substantial percentage of non-white residents. The people are friendly, although there is tension between the working class residents and the small number of very upper-class residents who live in the northern edges of the city.
Downtown AreaSchoolsSingle lifeNoise
It's not an exaggeration to say that the Mall of America provide just about every type of shopping you would ever need. The quality of the schools can best be described as average for the area. Which places them better than the national average, but nowhere near award-winning.The area around the Mall of America offers a number of bars and businesses targeted to singles.Since it's right next door to Minneapolis International Airport, there is a lot of aircraft noise.
town comparison vs.General comments
Savage is located just south of Bloomington and while it's much more rural, it is also much poorer and sprawling. If Bloomington is a tourist town, than Savage is a town filled with people who are there because they couldn't figure out anywhere better to be. To the East, Eagan is much more of a typical suburban town. Primarily residential, almost entirely middle and upper-class residents, with a much better school system than either Bloomington or Savage.Bloomington is a town with no real center or soul. The Mall of America dominates everything and as a result there isn't as much culture or excitement as you would expect to see in a town with so much commerce. It doesn't have any heart and no reason to exist no other than as a place for tourists and travelers. The people there are generally nice and friendly. But there isn't much of a sense of community and everyone seems to just be there to be part of the big MOA complex.
