Are you thinking of moving or relocating to Charleston, South Carolina? Would you like to know what the quality of life is like living in Charleston?
Ken L. reports in this review:
Weather | | How much crime? | | What are the neighborhoods like? | | What are the people like? | Summers are very hot and humid. Average temps range between high 80's to high 90's. June, July, and August are the hottest months. Down along the coast though, the breezes are nice, but still warm. Winters are very mild, with the lowest in the mid 30's which is very unusual. It can even be in the the 70's during certain months of winter. Spring and Fall months are beautiful. | | Speaking very honestly, crime is almost nill in the main parts of downtown. You can feel safe walking in the Market area, King St. or along the Battery even at 3 or 4 a.m. The few times that anything has happened, it's mainly of a low and petty nature. | | In the main area of downtown, (tourist area) it is very safe as i had said. The three most popular areas, not only for tourist, but locals alike are, Broad St., the Market area, And of course Upper King. There are a couple areas you want to avoid, one which is on the north end of Meeting St. and over toward the Old Cigar Factory. Once you get past the bars and restaurants on Upper King it starts getting a little shady also. But for the most part of downtown, VERY safe. North Charleston, which is a good drive outside of the city has some HIGH crime areas, but doesn't effect the downtown area at all. | | Wonderful !! And of course the Southern Hospitality abounds. You can stop anyone on the street that is from there for directions or information, and they are more than happy to assist. In the eateries the waite staff are genuinely freindly. Not just putting on an aire to get a bigger tip. Many of the staff in the food and bev industry, along with tourism, are locals, or from the College of Charleston,(which is right downtown). | Downtown Area | | Restaurants | | Schools | | Single life | King St. which is known as the Historic shopping area has almost anything you want. Many local shops, but of course the high end stores as well, such as Louis Vatton, Gucci, and more are there on King, as well as the better National chain stores. The Market area (on Market St.)has a variety of shops as well, with many local crafts, clothing and art works too. You can get to a few different malls also which are only a short drive away. | | Depending on what you like, you can find it in Charleston. Hanks is noted as one of the top seafood places downtown. But you have dozens of others to choose from in the seafood category. For a water view and good seafood also is Fleet Landing. For a great steak, the two main spots are "Halls Chop House"(on upper King)or "Oak',(located on Broad St.) Both in the downtown district. For great Italian, I highly recomend "Fulton Five"(Fulton Ave.) Quite a few Sushi resteraunts to choose from also. But BBQ,Greek, etc. just about anything your pallet desires you can find Downtown and in most of the surrounding areas. | | Depending on the area, most of the schools are decent. Of course the private schools have a much higher acheivement level than most of the Public schools. But overall, i would say a good education is there if you apply yourself. Just like anywhere else. | | Ahhh yes !! The single life is great here for not only the young, but the middle aged alike. The ratio is around 5 women to every 1 man. The upper King St. area is a great place to socialize, and many other surrounding areas offer a lot as well. | Noise | | town comparison vs. | | Best hospital | | Tourist attractions | Fairly quite for a downtown area of a city. The usual traffic of the tourist and the loudest you'll ever hear is a fire truck or the garbage pick ups in the a.m. hours. Being known as the "HOLY CITY" you can hear the church bells ringinging throughout town at different hours. | | Charleston is a comfortable size city with a (downtown) population of approximately 125,000 last that I knew. It's not the Capital of S.C. but has so much more to offer. I really can't compare it to any other Southeastern city, except St Augustine. | | Many to choose from, MUSC being the number one in the state. But also Roper Hospital is there, which is a fine facility too. There is also a VA in the downtown area as well. | | So much to choose from !!! With a city so full of history the choices are immense. The Old Slave Trading market, the Battery area where Charleston was invaded during the war, many Museums, dozens of galleries to choose from are all in the downtown area. And the list goes on ! The Plantations are also a great place to see, with the old plantation homes and gardens, along with the wildlife that abounds. Across the bridge from downtown on Patriots pt.(Mt.Pleasant) is the USS Yorktown carrier also. For a city the size of Charleston, it has so much to offer. Not only for the history, but the arts, music, and theater. I HIGHLY RECOMEND it to anyone of all ages. It's been named the #1 city in the U>s> more than once. And it was named the #1 wedding destination also. Go and enjoy !!!.......Ken L. | General comments | | | | | | | Overall the City of Charleston and most of the surrounding areas are great. I really can't say enough good things about it. Being a long time resident now, but also from coming down here since the late 70"s, Charleston has always been a favorite place to be. I've traveled extensively in the U.S. and it rates in the top 5 favorites for me. | | | | | | |
