Life in East Orange, New Jersey

East Orange Reviews New Jersey Message Board
City/State
Are you thinking of moving or relocating to East Orange, New Jersey? Would you like to know what the quality of life is like living in East Orange?
Jake Dempsey reports in this review:
WeatherHow much crime? What are the neighborhoods like? What are the people like?
The weather in East Orange is very similar to other weather in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. For the most part the summers are long and hot. During the summer months there are some powerful thunderstorms which can produce hail, as well as some tropical storms including the rare hurricane. During the winter months there are many snow storms that can dump up towards forty inches of snow throughout the season. There is an enormous amount of crime in this city. There are organized gangs that deal in assault, different extortion rings, and most importantly, drugs. The drugs and gang violence associated with the drugs are absolutely all-encompassing. There is more crime than the police are able to keep up with and many times it just seems better to move away from the area rather than to deal with the crime. There are murders and assaults in this city almost every month. The best parts of town are in the northern parts near Bloomburg plaza. This area is home to some of the oldest and most historic mansions from when East Orange was a respectful city nearly one hundred years ago. The people in this area are typically white and wealthy. The worst part of the town is in the main city proper, which is full of rowhomesand dilapidated apartment complexes. The majority of people who live in this part of town are black or African American, and very poor. The majority of the people in this town are poor, black, young, single, and under-educated. The people in this town are generally wary of any strangers that come into the town for fear of police connections as well as gang affiliations. For the most part, anyone who is white, older, educated, and white collar will not fit in well in this town, and quite frankly, will be a target for crimes and derision by the people in the town.
Downtown AreaRestaurantsSchoolsSingle life
The downtown shopping area is decent in terms of cultural markets, but not much else. There is the Ponderosa which is a decent place to eat at a low cost. There is another restaurant called Ming Ku Laus for good Chinese food. The public schools here are absolutely awful because there is bad funding, poor students, and teachers who do not care. There is very limited opportunities to meet the singles in this town unless you want to count single parents.
Noisetown comparison vs.Best hospitalTourist attractions
There is traffic and airplanes from the Newark airport that cause a great deal of noise. One of the neighboring towns is called West Orange, and it is pretty much the same type of place to live and operate in as East Orange. There are a lot of drugs and other crimes that are taking place in this city as well. There is a lower cost of living, but neither place is preferable to another. One of the other neighboring towns is called Newark. It is another dangerous and crime ridden town, but since it has a better police force and actual houses to live in, Newark is better to live in than East Orange. The local hospital is called the East Orange Hospital. They are good for most things, and are specially trained for gunshots. The best places to visit are the historical mansions and their surrounding parks.
General comments
Unless you are in the very wealthy part of town then the entire place feels like a ghetto. There are nothing but crumbling apartments and infrastructure, with literal gangs of people hanging out on the steps of these places simply because they have no jobs to go to or because they are trying to sell or steal something from the individuals in the town. The town feels like a very dangerous place to live and an even worse place to visit.
