Julie Segraves reports in this review:
WeatherHow much crime? What are the neighborhoods like? What are the people like?
The weather in Elmwood Park is similar to that of Chicago, though it is generally about 8 degrees warmer in the summer due to its distance from the lake. Winter temperatures average temperature in the winter hovers in the low 30's and in the summer the upper 70's. It rains mostly in the spring and early fall, but is not of the torrential variety. Snowfall is average for the region, generally no more than 24 inches for the entire winter. January is usually the coldest month dropping into the 20's.Elmwood Park is a relatively crime free community. There is little violent crime and the majority of property crimes are auto theft and theft. It has its share of burglaries, but in every crime category falls below the national average. The most heinous crime was a cross burning in front of the home of an interracial couple in 1992. The perpetrator was caught and brought to justice.Elmwood Park is predominately white with Hispanics coming in second. There are few African Americans in Elmwood Park, possibly due to a cross burning in front of the home of an interracial couple in 1992. The crime in this town is low, but the majority of it occurs in the southeast portion of the village due to the border with Chicago and access to Harlem Avenue and North Avenue, both major through streets. Crimes in these areas are mostly theft and property crimes. The people are good neighbors who know each other, socialize and help out when needed. Elmwood Park was traditionally a working class Italian neighborhood, but has grown through the years to represent a mixture of working class and white collar professionals. It is populated with whites, Asians and Hispanics, with those of Polish and Italian ethnicities dominating the mix.
Downtown AreaRestaurantsSchoolsSingle life
The downtown shopping is along Grand Avenue and offers small shops and some chain stores.Elmwood Park has some great restaurants, many of which have been there for decades. Jim & Pete's is the absolute best for pizza and Johnny's has a great beef sandwich and sells homemade Italian ice. The lines are ling in the summer but it has counter seats insides and picnic tables outside. Legendary is Russell's Barbeque. People come there from all areas of the city and suburbs, just to sample their ribs. The public schools in Elmwood Park are well rated and the Elmwood Park High School has an excellent athletic program. One seldom hears of problems at the schools and they are well attended. There are several taverns in Elmwood Park and a sports bar. The majority of liquor is sold in restaurants and over the counter as packaged liquor. It;s proximity to Chicago causes most singles to simply cross the border for their nightlife.
Noisetown comparison vs.Best hospitalTourist attractions
They are on a traffic pattern to O'Hare but the frequency is not sufficient enough to be intolerable. It is similar to River Grove and Schiller Park, the towns just north of it. They have similar ethnic and racial compositions and River Grove shares the same school district. The values in all these towns are the same as is the friendliness of the residents. The best hospital in the region is Loyola Medical Center, but Elmwood Park is closer to Gottlieb, Westlake and Our Lady of the Resurrection. The nicest place to visit is the forest preserves located to the west of the village. It is a great place to have a picnic or to simply enjoy family and friends. Barbeque pits and picnic tables are there for your convenience.
General comments
Elmwood Park is a great family town. There are activities for the kids and teens and there are several churches in the village to which residents have strong ties and participation. In the summer you will find people in their yards barbequing or chatting with neighbors while raking leaves in the fall.It is a good place to raise your children. It is also close to public transportation with a Metra stop and buses on the major streets.
