Summer in Eugene is generally pleasatly warm, with average top temperatures in the high 70s and 80s, but rarely getting too hot. In winter the average low is just above freezing, and average top temperatures are in the 40s. It sometimes snows in winter, but the snow doesn't usually sit on the ground. It has a mild, seaboard climate. | | There is very little crime in Eugene. It's a university town with a sleepy, friendly feel to it. You might get the occasional robbery but violent crime is very rare. While I was staying there, some friends had their car broken into when it was parked at the head of a hiking trail, and I believe that sort of thing is fairly common. | | Eugene doesn't really have any bad areas. The nicest areas are nearest to the University of Oregon, and this has a good buzz of student life and professors live around there. Another great area is in southeast Eugene, which is hilly and has views across the town and breezes in the summer. | | People are extremely friendly and there is a very strong community in Eugene. The town is famous for its hippies and progressive thinkers. |

The Fifth St market area in downtown Eugene has been revamped in the last few years, and this has started to attract people back to the downtown for shopping and cafe life. The city has two malls, the largest is the Valley River Center. | | Sixth Street Grill is fantastic, but it's still fairly casual. | | This is a university town, and the trickledown effect means that the public schools are generally of a better quality than the average. | | Between the students and the professors, there's sure to be someone for everyone. |

There's some noise if you're close to the Five, but otherwise it's very quiet. | | Oregon has a lot of small cities that punch well above their weight, such as Ashland, Medford, McMinville and Lincoln City. Eugene is actually the second largest city in the state after Portland, but Eugene has the peace and calm of a much smaller town with all the culture, food and entertainments that you would expect from a city. | | The hospital in Eugene is Sacred Heart in the University District. | | The college campus is a must-see, and wandering around the river and climbing Spencers Butte. |

The town has a sleepy and quiet feel out of the college year. The student population definitely livens things up with sports matches, arts performances and festivals. There is an amazing farmers market on the weekends in the centre of town. | | | | | | |
