Julie Segraves reports in this review:
WeatherHow much crime? What are the neighborhoods like? What are the people like?
The weather mirrors Chicago's weather, as Evanston is the next suburb north, and also borders the lakefront. Winters are fairly mild with temperatures that stay around freezing most of the time. Snowfall is not excessive, though it can be a victim of lake effect snow.In parts of Evanston, there is gang activity, some of which spills over from Chicago, just across Howard St. The Evanston police do work with the Chicago police and together they keep the violent crime to about the national average. Property crimes are slightly above the national average. The good neighborhoods are in north Evanston, where it is mostly single family homes. In south Evanston the larger rental units have a more transient population and higher crime, due to its proximity to Chicago.Evanston is an ethnically and racially diverse city whose residents tend to be more liberal and active politically. Evanston's people are known for rallying around a cause and holding candlelight vigils and gatherings in the downtown.
Downtown AreaRestaurantsSchoolsSingle life
The downtown area is walkable and filled with small, niche businesses, cafes and coffee shops. It also offers ethnic restaurants and chain stores.Mustard's Last stand is great for hot dogs and has been in Evanston forever. Lou Malnati's Pizzaria has excellent pizza and Italian food as well.Evanston High School is a well-rated school with a vibrant athletic program. It has a fairly evenly mixed racial enrollment. It has been the scene of some gang problems, but the Evanston police are quick to respond.Evanston does not have any clubs, but does have restaurants where liquor is sold. Singles tend to go into the city.
Noisetown comparison vs.Best hospitalTourist attractions
There are no unusual noise sources.Evanston is very similar to Oak Park, which has the same activism and passion for causes. Both tend to vote independent or democratic.Evanston Hospital is highly rated and has specialty centers such as cancer and women's health. The nicest place to visit is the beach in the summer. Go to the beach to barbeque, swim in the lake or enjoy the great outdoors. In the winter go to the toboggan hill, Mount Trashmore, that was built over an old garbage dump.
General comments
