Life in Farmington, Minnesota

Farmington Reviews Minnesota Message Board
City/State
Are you thinking of moving or relocating to Farmington, Minnesota? Would you like to know what the quality of life is like living in Farmington?
Rick Ellis reports in this review:
WeatherHow much crime? What are the neighborhoods like? What are the people like?
Like most of Minnesota, Farmington can be a tough place to live in the winter. Brutal cold with temperatures that frequently dip below zero
Winters can also bring an average of forty inches of snow, with several storms dumping a foot or more at a time.

The crime rate is pretty low, with most of the crime being theft and property damage. There is perhaps one murder a year, and those tend to be the result of domestic violence or other family disputes. Overall, it's a safe place to live. The best parts of town are in the northern part of the city, which borders Apple Valley. That area has newer executive homes and groupings of top-end townhomes. The part of the city just south of downtown is probably the worst, since it comprised mostly of rundown trailers and single-family homes which haven't been maintained.
Another tough area is the strip of homes and stores along Highway 3. The area is old and not maintained and it includes a number of abandoned buildings.
There is a group of long-time residents who lived on the area for generations. They are polite but not always friendly to newcomers. The population has grown over the past decade, but zoning is haphazard and the result is that the neighborhoods don't feel connected. It's a terrible place to be a teenager, which might explain why the town seems to be a mix of old coffers and young couples looking for an affordable home.
RestaurantsSchoolsSingle lifetown comparison vs.
The Farmington Inn is one of the town's few non-chain restaurants and it serves decent American roadhouse food.
The Farmington schools are academically in the middle range for Minnesota. But financially, the district is in free fall and they have been for ed to shut down a number of popular programs.Overall, it's a terrible place for singles. There is little nightlife and few places for singles to live or work. While Lakeville is just as far south as Farmington, it's right next to an Interstate, making the daily commute much easier. It also has a much better school system and a stable city council. Apple Valley lies directly north of Farmonton and it as one of the best districts on the country. It also has a thriving business district and while it is pricier than Farmington, most people consider the increased cost to be worth it.
Best hospitalGeneral comments
Northfield Regional hospital is a very good teaching facility with world-class doctors. But it's also nearly a half hour drive away from town.Of all the southern suburbs in the Twin Cities area, Farmington is the least impressive. It's the farthest south most people would want to commute into the city and if you're living there and commuting, you're probably pretty desperate. Add to that the political infighting and school district problems and Farmington isn't going to be on the top of anyone's list of places to live.
