Summers can be very hot and dry. Since Gettysburg is know for its large Civil War battle an interesting note is that in July 1863 the weather was over 100 F everyday of the battle. Springtime is best to visit with mild weather and light rains. If visiting in the wintertime the weather can drop to as low as 20 F and snow can fall up to 6 inches on average. | | Gettysburg is relatively crime free. If police respond it is due to car accidents or petty theft. In the springtime Gettysburg attracts many teenagers from schools across the nation, they arrive by buses chartered by their schools for tours. These students can often be rowdy when in their hotels and often visitors can complain and even call the police for disturbing the peace. | | US route 30 runs through the city and goes into the downtown. The downtown is made up of many commercial hotels and also many private bed and breakfast accommodations. There is no bad part of the city for the city itself is tidy, clean and safe. One will often see a police car patrolling the streets.
The city is predominately white middle to high class with a few millionaires living in the historic housing. The best housing and most expensive real estate lies in the city itself, this is due because of zoning and it is nearly impossible to build new buildings in the cities center. Most of the buildings one will find were built in the 19th century. | | The people tend to stay to themselves and do not intermingle with visitors. if your looking for good conversations with the locals it best to stay at a bed and breakfast. If visiting the city in early July it's best to take a side, either North or South. If doing thus you can find many friendly souls who will gladly communicate with you.
The city attracts millions of tourist a year and one can find people from all over the globe. As for the locals themselves Gettysburg is predominately white American. |

The downtown is very cleans and relaxing. The town itself to the battlefield is very well taken care of, between the two is a large cemetery which is very quite and calm.
If one wishes to shop most of the retail store lie on the outskirts of the city. There one can find a Wal mart or a chain restaurant. | | Dobbin House Tavern is a unique restaurant that offers a visitor a historic setting and delicious food. The restaurant is an old stone house that has a touch of romantic history to it. This is a must for any newlyweds or married couple to visit. Prices are affordable at about $10-15 a plate, and their French Onion soup is said to be the best in all of Pennsylvania. | | Public Schools are good and well funded. Gettysburg has very high property taxes and also makes income via tourism to support their schools. Gettysburg has some of the newest and best schools in the state. | | Good for historians or reenactors. If you love the civil war or the times of days gone by, then this place can offer another like minded person. |

U.S route 30 runs through the city and can at times be extra noisy with large amounts of traffic. | | Hanover lies about 15 miles from Gettysburg and makes also for an interesting site since this is the beginning of the Amish community which stretches on out to Lancaster. It's not uncommon to see black buggies on the roads and farmers markets.
Baltimore MD, lies 50 miles to the south and is the largest city within distance. If visiting Gettysburg for a peaceful stay it best to avoid part of Baltimore since it is one of the highest crime cities in America. | | WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital is the main hospital. It is rather old and was built after World War One. | | The battlefield itself is very nice. It is very quite and has many monuments , cannons, and war relics. The wax museum of Presidents interesting and some of the President can even talk! In the center of the battlefield is the visitors center which has a large panorama of the Battle of Gettysburg. |

If one would take away all the cars and telephone lines then the city feels like you just stepped into 1863. The buildings are of red brick and built in the early 1800s. The city offers charms for everyone. For Civil war buffs this city should be a top priority visit. If African American and wanting to know a little about the underground railway then Gettysburg will not disappoint for the city has many historical spots where slaves hid to escape their hard lives of bondage. If interested in ghost or the supernatural, Gettysburg is a hot spot for many ghost sightings. It is not uncommon for visitors who stay at an old bed and breakfast to see an vision of a Confederate ghost walking the hallway.
Overall the city has a bit of an eerie feel to it since over 40,000 Americans were slaughtered in this place. | | | | | | |
