The wet season from May through October brings torential downpours. Winters are mild, with lows in the 50's, and snow is extremely rare. Hurricanes threaten the area, though it's been over 20 years since the last one hit. | | Homestead is a lower-income town, and with that comes a general abundance of crime. Break-ins and other thefts are often reported, as well as assaults and violence. Night time vandalism is most common, with frequent bouts of gang-affiliated events. Police patrols are frequent in the area. | | Homestead's better areas are located along its northern border, along SW 137th Avenue (Speedway Boulevard). The northern border is locally known as the community of Leisure City. Here, homes are neat and manicured, well-cared for, and set back from the street. The Southwest corridor of the city from SW 304th Street (Kings Highway) to SW 328th Street (Lucy Street) is generally considered the lower area of town, bordering the Everglades. Here, farm and marshland make up much of the terrain. | | People here are real, down-to-earth, no frills people. Most people work hard to earn and living, and often have lived in the area their entire lives. Many are uneducated, and work in agriculture. There are also the higher income folks looking for an escape from the normal scene of southern Florida, a wide range of young professionals and older retirees. The people are on the whole quite welcoming and genuine. |
