Kristina Pearman reports in this review:
WeatherHow much crime? What are the neighborhoods like? What are the people like?
Weather patterns have changed over the last 10 years but typically is hot in the summer. Temperatures reaching over 100 degrees. Spring and Fall are very pretty with mild temperatures around 70 degrees. Spring showers with possibility of serve thunderstorms or tornadoes. Iola hasn't been hit by tornadoes but the sirens go off every year as tornadoes do travel west of town along the Neosho river. Winters are cold. Wind chill makes it feel colder than it truly is. Snow is likely and ice storms but not much accumulation most of the time. But the mid-west does occasionally get its share of serve weather.Iola is a small town with a low crime rate. Everyone knows everyone business and neighbors watch out for each other. For the most part the whole town is about the same class wise and mostly white. But I would avoid Eisenhower drive on the west side. and the best houses are between Cottonwood and Kentucky past the community college. Holiday Lane is another good area and also the best for Christmas lights. Most of south Iola past vine street is unlivable since the flood a few years back. The area just north of riverside park is also unlivable from the flood. The town is 90% white. People are friendly and neighborly. Helping out a stranger is a common thing here. the community is one big family.
Downtown AreaRestaurantsSchoolsSingle life
downtown or the square as the locals call it is the hangout place. During the day its full of people shopping in local stores like Saturdays, Mcginty-Whitworth, Sophisticated Rose, and the Treasure Chest (flea market). The square has everything you need on it. Office supplies, flowers, flea market, pharmacy, insurance company, and the best restaurant in town: El Charro. The center of the square is the courthouse and its yard which is where Farm City Days is held each August. Also on the yard is a memorial for the local soldiers that fought in war times. Only downside to the square is that is the the hangout at night of the locals that like to drink and cruse the square or park and just hangout. The best restaurant in town is located on the south side of the square, it is El Charro. Renee's Bakery on the West side of the square is the best place to get fresh donuts in the morning or cookies. Down State street in B&B country Cafe, best place in town to get a good home-cooked meal.Good school system with lots of different opportunities for the students. A range of sports including football, basketball, track, etc. Clubs of all sorts, foreign language, creative writing, SAD, etc. Newspaper, music, theater, etc. Most teachers have been there for a long time. Going through school my teachers had taught my older sister and my parents. Very personal teaching techniques. There really isn't a lot to do for singles in town.
Noisetown comparison vs.Best hospitalTourist attractions
overall the town is pretty quiet. there is the main highway just east of town. no airport and planes don't go over much. it's a very peaceful quiet town.Iola is the biggest town in Allen county and also the county seat. it is better than neighboring towns of Gas and Yates Center because it has more, like a college, hospital, Wal-mart, etc.Allen County Hospital is located where Madison street becomes East street at 1st street. it's the best hospital in the county. The new cinema out west of town is very nice and a hot spot for activities. Riverside park is a most visit with lots of area to walk and see the squirrels run around as your kids play on the playgrounds while you prepare a picnic lunch and then go to the pool for a swim. Riverside park is the place to go during the summer months.
General comments
Iola is a great town to raise kids. its got all the small town charm. never have to worry about your kids out riding their bikes all over town or trying to get into trouble cause someone will tell you about it. Everyone knows everyone else. it's a true community family style town.
