Weather | | How much crime? | | What are the neighborhoods like? | | What are the people like? |
Due to the fact that the Southern part of the island receives very little wind due to the presence of the Iao Valley, Kihei is known to have relatively consistent sunny weather. This consistency is present during both the summer and winter months. The only weather differentiation is when there is occasional flooding, but this would usually influence the entire island's weather. This flooding would also cause mud slides. | | The type of crime present in this area, as found in other areas of the island, is the presence of car break-ins. This is found in areas frequented by tourists. Other tourist-related crimes are: muggings, harassment at night, and car theft. Kihei is largely residential, so these are the most common crimes found in the area. | | Kihei generally has the best parts of times in the neighborhoods that just border the shoreline, due to the property value. However, despite the difference in property values, the general housing style is single-story beach house. Overall, Kihei tends to be a more expensive part of the island, and is overall more residential in nature. Also, the population is majority Caucasian, and there is a really big surfer culture present here. The least savory houses are located by the freeway near the Northern entrance to Kihei. | | The people in Kihei are older and have been on the island for a long time. Also, the people are mostly white. This population mainly has arrived to the island due to retirement. People who do not have families would not fit in well here, due to the neighborhood's higher prices and mostly residential community. Also, the neighborhood is a bit more conservative than the rest of the island, and tend to keep to themselves. |
Downtown Area | | Restaurants | | Schools | | Single life |
The downtown area and shopping choices are nice, but they are not as nice as the options in Lahaina. | | Ka'ana Kitchen and Cuatro are both quality restaurants within the Kihei area. These restaurants are also located in the main shopping area off of the freeway. | | There are two main public schools and are good quality schools. Many of the children in Kihei are home-schooled. | | There is a main shopping center near the North entrance of Kihei, and there are many bars located in that center. This is the main area in which singles can mingle. |
Noise | | town comparison vs. | | Best hospital | | Tourist attractions |
There is only the noise of the freeway in the North side of town. The other parts of town are pretty remote. | | Kihei will be compared to Lahaina and Paia. Kihei is better to live in than either of these other cities due to its location; it is located on the intersection of three major freeways, and is located close to Lahaina (the resort center of the island) and the shoreline. Also, Kihei is less chaotic than Lahaina, which is usually dominated by tourists. Another quality facet of Kihei is the availability of quality snorkeling opportunities. While Paia also has a more quaint feel, Paia has less access to resources and shopping centers than Kihei. | | The nearest quality hospital is near Wailuku. | | The nicest place to visit is the shoreline. A majority of the shoreline gives access to the public. |
General comments | | | | | | |
This town is a surfer town focused on the beach, and it feels very laid-back. It also is mostly safe, despite all of the potential risks to tourists. The town is also mostly owned by the residents, not rented, thus, the income-level is naturally much higher on this part of the island. This part of the island is also the snorkeling hub, and is nearby many wildlife refuge areas. Kihei is also situated near some convenient shopping centers along the main road off of the freeway, so it's not too isolated from the rest of the island, despite its location. | | | | | | |
