Life in Lafayette, Louisiana

Lafayette Reviews Louisiana Message Board
City/State
Are you thinking of moving or relocating to Lafayette, Louisiana? Would you like to know what the quality of life is like living in Lafayette?
Charles Langat reports in this review:
WeatherHow much crime? What are the neighborhoods like? What are the people like?
Lafayette has hot and humid weather in summer and cooler weather during winter. August is the warmest month with temperatures averaging 91 degrees Fahrenheit while January is the coldest month. Lafayette receives evenly distributed rainfall all year round.
Every town has its fair share of jerks, Lafayette is no exception here. While I've not been mugged, I know of a couple of death shootings and stabbings. Notable ones being a shooting near Martin Luther King Center and a girl killed at Souvenir Road while riding a bike. Violent crimes for the most part are related to drugs.Neighborhoods:
The best neighborhoods to live are along the southwestern parts of the city and the eastern section, Elks/Pilette. Mouton and Point Des Mouton are considered equally safe. Avoid neighborhoods that run along East Pinhook Rd, West Congress Street, Dulles Drive, Cameroon Street, and East Simcoe Street.

Race:

Lafayette is a predominantly Whites' city. Whites make up about 70% of the population while African-Americans roughly 29%. Most of the residents here have a shared Cajun ancestry.

Housing:

Northside, houses the old working class folks. Southside has decent family units, university housing units, and some apartments. You can find houses for rent between Cameron and Johnson. Saint streets has old cottage style homes and craft men houses dating back to the 1920's. You can find decent apartments start from $600-1000 in Kaliste Saloom area. Strangely, some apartments just don't have contact details- no numbers to call and no information!
You don't need to be here long enough to figure out that folks in Lafayette are laid-back and dull. You may be forgiven to think they are snobbish, but they aren't. On the bright side, folks are more kind and caring for each other here than they are anywhere Louisiana. Life is family oriented and revolves around slow-moving culture and food. Anyway, if you love folk music, native cuisine, and fishing, Lafayette might just be the right city for you
Downtown AreaRestaurantsSchoolsSingle life
The shopping area in Lafayette doesn't have the fancy appeal of most northern cities. For the most part, the down town looks drab, but not outrageous.I have just eaten out thrice and I'd recommend Zea Rotisserie & Grill, Blue Dog Caf', and Charley G's Seafood Grill. I believe there are other exciting restaurants around Lafayette.
Lafayette operates a Parish School System that comprises 7 high schools, 12 middle schools, and 21 elementary schools. The system offers 9 career academies designed to shape the career path of students from high school level.Let me be downright honest, you won't thrive in Lafayette as a single. There isn't much a single can do or explore beyond the cuisine and fishing.
Noisetown comparison vs.Best hospitalTourist attractions
Lafayette Regional airport is situated on the southeast side of Lafayette and it's a potential source of noise if you live nearby.Lafayette is much bigger than its neighbors Carencro and Scott. You will find more diversity and variety here, but it isn't as neat as organized as you want it to be. As a city that is gaining momentum, Lafayette has great potential for growth and improvement. The best hospitals here are Heart hospital of lafayette, lafayette general medical center, and university medical center. The Mall of Arcadania will suffice your shopping rendezvous. I'd also recommend Lafayette Parks, a recreation system that comprises 36 parks and recreation centers ( 4 swimming pools, 3 golf courses and tennis courts). There isn't much to explore unless you love Cajun and Creole gourmet
General comments
Lafayette is a moderately-sized and laid-back city at the very the heart of Cajun country . The people are friendly for the most part. City doesn't look appealing structurally, in my view, seems messy. Trailers, workshops, and factories are lined up in one street. Planning could give the town an organized look. Roads are not the best, needs much improvement. Culture, food, and fishing are major things here. That's all there is to explore.
