Joe Mitchell reports in this review:
WeatherHow much crime? What are the neighborhoods like? What are the people like?
Hot and humid in the summer. The summer temperatures are in the 90's but the humidity makes it feel hotter. Winters are mild, but also humid. Annual rainfall is 50 inches. Most crime is drug related. The local newspaper does not do much crime reporting. The east side of town is the best area. The houses are newer and nicer. The west and south parts of town are the bad neighborhoods. It's hard to make friends. Most social life is centered around churches and schools.
Downtown AreaRestaurantsSchoolsSingle life
The Magnolia Square shopping area is in decline. Around 1970 the Magnolia Square was THE shopping area. Now WalMart is the leading store. The most popular restaurant is The Flying Burger which offers very goof hamburgers and seafood. Miller's Cafeteria and Marlar's Cafeteria offer good quality , inexpensive lunches. The public schools are of good quality. There is a private christian school, Columbia Christian School which offers an alternative to the public schools. There is no night life in Magnolia.
town comparison vs.Best hospitalTourist attractionsGeneral comments
Magnolia is similar to other small towns in South Arkansas but the churches exert more influence. Southern Arkansas University gives the town a large youth population.Magnolia Regional Medical Center is a recently built facility which offers good medical care.LOGOLY state park is a real attraction. Lake Columbia offers fishing and swimming.Magnolia looks good; is careful about its image. If a person has a good job it's a good place to live. the churches exert a lot of influence. Columbia County is a dry county (no alcohol sales).
