Are you thinking of moving or relocating to Minden, Nevada? Would you like to know what the quality of life is like living in Minden?
Matthew Johnson reports in this review:
Weather | | How much crime? | | What are the neighborhoods like? | | What are the people like? | There are usually intermediate heavy snow storms in the winter, but the snow doesn't stick to the valley floor for more than a few days, though icy roads are constant problem in the winter. It gets fairly hot in the summer and lingers around 90-100 degrees at the very hottest, but most days are fair late april-september. Occasionally very windy, but mountains on all sides usually discourage strong winds. (taken from my review of Gardnerville, the two towns are connected) | | Next to no crime. Minden is a part of the valley that is primarily small businesses, police/fire stations, government buildings, schools, with a few residential areas. Occasional thefts or assaults in the newspaper, but overall very low crime. I read the newspaper and there are always small bits about a few crazies but nothing above what is typical for a town this size. | | Though the neighborhood has no official name to my knowledge, locals refer to it as County Road and the surrounding neighborhood, as well as "behind the High School" and a neighborhood called Windhaven are the three neighborhoods in Minden. The first two are near Mormon Churches and are made up of many Mormon communities, many of which are my friends and are the nicest people I have ever met. The third, Windhavem, has many old, retired, white folk who are just as nice. | | Lots of Mormons, lots of Whites. The next most is likely hispanics, though they are very nice. There is a reservation on the south end of the valley, and there are occasional festivals that are open to all and very fun. Not a great pool for singles because of the sheer number of the old and the married, almost all young people move away for work or school. Mostly blue collar, very few white collar, except for the retired. | Downtown Area | | Restaurants | | Schools | | Single life | Downtown, what we call Main Street is full of wonderful little shops and delis, and there is a Walmart, Raleys, Home Depot, and Walgreens at the south end of town. Serious shoppers go to Carson City (15 minute drive) or to Reno (40-70 minute drive, depending on where in Reno). | | Cowboy Cafe, Katie's, Saletti's, CV steak, Wild Horse, Franciscos, and El Aguila Real are local favorites. | | Excellent! The teachers will be your friend and and truly care about the children! I am 25 and still received birthday and Christmas cards from my first grade teacher. | | Very low opportunity for singles, but South Lake Tahoe is an excellent place for singles and is only a short drive up the mountain. | Noise | | town comparison vs. | | Best hospital | | Tourist attractions | If you live near farms you can hear coyotes or in the spring cows make a lot of noise birthing. Other that there are two main highways, 395 and 80, but are fairly isolated. | | Genoa is the nearest town, and is the oldest town in all of Nevada. If one is interested in building a home, there is a lot of open land, but the town is tiny. It is fully of history, and is home to many "Nevada's first" and the grave of the famous Snowshoe Thompson. It is cheap to live there but the homes are a century old and are far from stores. The next nearest town is famous South Lake Tahoe, which located at the top of Kingsbury Grade, which connects Gardnerville to Lake Tahoe. The Lake and surrounding houses are beautiful and are great if one loves to ski or hike or mountain bike, and the city has casinos, beaches, Heavenly village, many small shops with handmade items, shopping centers, boating, and much more, but the whole place gets pummeled with snow and is expensive to live there. Minden is perfect because it is cheap to live there and is a short 15-20 minute drive to the lake. | | Carson-Tahoe Regional Medical Center is excellent and full of experienced doctors that have come to the Valley for a quieter life. | | South lake Tahoe is by far the nicest place to visit. The lake is Beautiful and has many nice beaches and attractions, and the skiing/snowboarding is nearby and relatively reasonably priced. | General comments | | | | | | | Very friendly, very clean, and overall very quiet place to live. The schools are great and the area is especially nice if you like the outdoors. The town is in Carson Valley, not to be confused with Carson City, which is in the next valley over, Eagle Valley. This town is safe, quiet, and a great place to retire or raise children, and is where i plan to do both. What does this town feel like to me? Home. | | | | | | |
