Newport's weather is very wet with cool, mild temperatures year round. Summer temps usually reach highs in the 60's, with many days only in the 50's. Though most of the annual rainfall is in the winter (some winter months receive a foot or more), summer months still tend to be overcast with light drizzle. Winters are chilly with temperatures in the 30's and 40's. There is some snowfall in the area, with winter months receiving anywhere from a trace to 3 inches of wet snow. Like many coastal towns, there is some risk of flooding, especially in the winter season. | | As is so often the case in tourist towns, Newport does have its fair share of crime. This picturesque vacation spot actually ranks above the US average for crime. Most crime is theft and burglary, resulting from large numbers of homes being left with doors and windows unlocked. Automobiles are similarly left unlocked on a regular basis. Assaults and robberies on unsuspecting tourists are also reported in this area. More violent crimes however, such as rape and murder, are very low. | | The most desirable areas in Newport are located directly on the ocean, in neighborhoods such as Yaquina Bay, South Beach, and Newport Heights. Homes in these communities range from small beach bungalows to larger craftsman type homes and condos, but all are expensive and have great ocean views. Many are rental properties popular with tourists.
While there are no "bad" areas of Newport, less expensive areas are located further east, away from the city center, on roads like Bay St. and Windmill Dr. While still neat and tidy, homes are smaller and have no direct beach access or views. The area is also further from shopping and dining. | | Thanks to a large number of tourists and seasonal residents, Newport's people are a diverse population. There is, however, a tendency towards those well-educated. Residents are for the most part white-collar, working in sales, business and service related professions. The overwhelming majority of people are white, followed by Native Americans and Hispanics/Latinos. There seems to be an equal mix of singles, families with children, and older retirees. People seem to be a friendly, genuine bunch. If you take a morning stroll through the outdoor market, there's a high likelihood of being engaged in conversation with a friendly old lady. |

There is also noise from ships going in and out of the harbor. | | Newport might be considered a superior place to live in comparison with neighboring Toledo. Toledo has none of the beaches, recreation, and attractions that Newport claims. It also has a larger population and lacks the relaxed, vacation atmosphere of Newport.
Newport could also be considered superior to Corvallis, the nearest major city inland. With several major corporations as well as a university, Corvallis' noise pollution is another factor that is not concerning in Newport. | | Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital provides high quality emergency care services not only to Newport but also the surrounding smaller communities. | | The Oregon Coast History Center and Museum as well as the Marine Sciences Center offer visitors a look at nautical history and information.
