The town is approximately 30% safer than other cities in the US. | | The Lakeview Drive area of Nitro is quiet and built in a forest area, where deer walk right up to your back patio and raccoon will eat out of your hand. Nitro is home to the Brandywine Market, featuring 40 shops of arts, crafts, clothing and more. The market is open during the weekends. The town is also home to a Wal-Mart Super Center and an Antique Mall. | | Diehl's Restaurant offers wonderful pie and southern cuisine in the Mid-Atlantic states. Interstate 64 passes through town and is heavily traveled by trucks, both day and night, due to convenience and the chemical plants in the region. Yeager Airport in Charleston is just 15 miles away and on a clear day, you may hear a plane pass overhead. The occasional sonic boom has been known to occur as well. | | Nitro is a unique town in that it is also home to the schools and Post Office that unincorporated Cross Lanes' residents (5 miles to the east) enjoy. Charleston, as the state capital, has the big city feel with Yeager Airport, the Capitol, etc. and as urban sprawl shifts east, Nitro is centered along I-64 in prime sprawl territory. Compared to other comparably sized towns in Putnam and Kanawha County, Nitro compares fairly similarly. The main difference I have seen is that even nestled between Huntington and Charleston and despite the chemical plants, Nitro has plenty of public parks and recreation options for residents and visitors to enjoy. | | Charleston Area Medical Center in the state capital is just 12 miles away from Nitro. CAMC in Teays Valley is 9 miles away in Hurricane, West Virginia. | | Museum in the Community, Hawks Nest State Park, Avampato Discovery Museum, Chief Logan State Park, Beech Fork State Park, and Cultural Center are all nice places for visitors to experience and enjoy. |

The town's population as of the last census was approximately 7,100 and yet, while Nitro is just 12 miles west of Charleston, the state capital, there is a small town feel to the area. | | | | | | |
