Randy Anderson reports in this review:
WeatherHow much crime? What are the neighborhoods like? What are the people like?
The summers are hot and muggy. The temperature in the hottest months can top 90 and the days are often humid without much wind. But when there is a break in the heat, there can be anything from severe storms to even tornadoes. The winter months are mild and while there can be some snow, it's typically just a light frosting. In general, Pelham has a low serious crime rate. Most of the crime tends to be of the general minor variety: random property damage, burglaries and minor theft. It's been several years since there has been a murder in town and serious crimes tend to be a lot less common than in some of the surrounding communities. The best part of town is the newer area across the railroad tracks and along Highway 52. The areas is filled with a number of new developments with multi-story family homes. Most of the area was farmland a decade ago and the town's population growth has mostly taken place in this area. The worst area is likely the older commercial district that runs borders Highway 31. The area is older and is filled with a mix of tired strip malls, old single-level apartment buildings and single-family ranch houses that date back to the early 60s. Housing costs in general are cheaper than in nearby areas. Which accounts for the new housing, as well as the state of the older buildings.Pelham is about 90 percent white, with the other ten percent split equally between Hispanic and African-American residents. The town's residents are mostly working class, although a growing number of newer residents commute north into executive jobs in Hoover and Birmingham. Pelham doesn't have a lot of social services and would be a difficult place to live if you're lower income or struggling in some way. There is a substantial number of twenty and thirtysomething residents, but the majority of them are married.
Downtown AreaSchoolsSingle lifeNoise
Pelham doesn't really have a downtown area. The town does include a number of national brand stores, but they are scattered randomly down Highway 31.While the Pelham public schools aren't as good as the nearby Hoover school system, the schools are still above average in quality. There aren't a lot of restaurants or other places suitable for a date, bur Pelham does have a few clubs and locally-owned bars.Highway 65 is a major interstate and it cuts through the east part of town. The traffic on the highway can be frequent and loud.
town comparison vs.General comments
Hoover lies to the immediate north of Pelham and it's a much more middle-upper class town. Hoover has one of the biggest malls in the South and a vibrant business district. But the cost of living is higher, and that sends some people into Pelham. Alabaster is south of Pelham and is much more rural and rustic. It's surrounded by farmland and it basically a small town that has added some new housing developments in recent years. Alabaster is a town for commuters who want large lots and even the ability to have horses and other large livestock.Pelham is really just a sprawling small town that's turned into a suburb of Birmingham. There isn't any real downtown or city center and not much in the way of community services. It's a no-nonsense town without a lot of airs or ambitions. It's not the kind of place to live if you like the arts or any entertainment other than the occasional rock club or bingo parlor.
