Weather | | How much crime? | | What are the neighborhoods like? | | What are the people like? |
The weather is pretty good here. summers do get hot. temps as high as 110 degrees. Spring brings thunderstorms and tornado watches but Pittsburg doesn't get hit with tornado (all the towns around it do). Winter brings ice and storm at times and very cold wind chills. | | Crime isn't too bad here. There are some break-ins and thief. So don't leave valuables in the open in your car. but it's a safe town and I always felt comfortable walking even at night. | | Most students live on campus or in apartments around town. areas around the college are primary students. Broadway and 4th street divide the town. West Pittsburg has some very nice older homes and is where the richer townies live. North Pittsburg is where the low income area is. | | people are very nice. most are college students and so there is a wide range of ethnic backgrounds but still there are more whites then anything. everyone seems to want to have a good time and enjoying life. |
Downtown Area | | Restaurants | | Schools | | Single life |
downtown is very nice with some local bars and shopping. But the best shopping center is north of town near Wal-mart and Hastings. There is also a small mall in the south part of town but it doesn't have a lot of good stuff in it and stores change a lot there. | | There are a few very good restaurants. Chatters is one of my favorites. Cafe del rio is another good one. The best local restaurants are Chicken Mary's and chicken Annie's, which are right beside each other North of town and owned by sisters. | | I didn't attend the public schools here. Just the college. But I heard that they are good schools that have a variety of activities for students and give good education. | | There are a wide variety of bars. PSU has a lot of activities and clubs. mostly if you are in college there are opportunities to meet new people. otherwise it's just the bar scene. |
Noise | | town comparison vs. | | Best hospital | | Tourist attractions |
Trains go through town daily and can be loud if you live near them but otherwise there's not too much noise. | | Joplin, MO is about 30 minutes away and it's the town everyone goes to for shopping or entertainment that we can't get in Pittsburg. It's also has some good places to eat that Pittsburg doesn't' have. So it's a good town to visit for a few hours but Pittsburg is more homey, safer, and not in the path of the tornadoes as much as Joplin is. Another neighboring town is Frontenac which is north of Pittsburg and is a very small town, if Pittsburg seems ideal for you but a bit too big of a town then live in Frontenac. otherwise there's not much there. | | Pittsburg has a very good hospital Via Christi on Mt Carmel street. They have a children's hospital and a psychiatry hospital there. There are a few nice parks. the main park, Lincoln park is in the north part of town and is where the public pool is located. Another park and the one I prefer is Lakeside park off of college street in the west side of town. it's got tennis courts and playground for kids. but what I enjoyed most was walking around the lake. Another great place to walk is a nature walking trails off of McKay St north of town. | | Pittsburg State University campus is very nice and a must visit for all. |
General comments | | | | | | |
This is a college town for sure. the community revolves around the college. Most activities are at PSU and most of this population are students. the townies seem relaxed and happy to have college students in their town helping the community out. | | | | | | |
