Life in Reno, Nevada

Reno Reviews Nevada Message Board
City/State
Are you thinking of moving or relocating to Reno, Nevada? Would you like to know what the quality of life is like living in Reno?
Matthew Johnson reports in this review:
WeatherHow much crime? What are the neighborhoods like? What are the people like?
Very cold and snowy in the winter, but well managed in the city- they have been doing this for decades. No natural disasters, though sometimes the snow and ice impedes traffic and travel. The summer provides for temperate to hot climate mostly, occasionally pushing over 100 degrees, but usually around 90. In the south end of town near Washoe valley it gets very windy. There is the occasional news of an assault or robbery, but it almost always takes place downtown and in the middle of the night. I live near the University and get notifications from the campus police about strange activity, but its rarely more that a suspicious homeless person or stray dog.Worst part of town is downtown and the surrounding residential, sad to say. Full of scary individuals and homeless, though they are mostly harmless. The casino/hotels desperately need renovation. Nicest parts of town are the UNR campus and the residential neighborhoods north of campus. Other nice areas are Midtown, which is south of downtown on Streets like Kietske, S Virginia (NOT north Virginia). The Summit, Meadowwood mall, and the Legends are nice shopping areas. Neighborhoods that are nice are Lakeridge, North Ridge, Sun Valley, Thunder Canyon, the Highlands, and the neighborhood near Washoe Golf Course. As the second biggest city after Las Vegas, there are all shapes and sizes of people in Reno, but every person will not fit in to every part. The largest portion of blacks and the low-income families live off closer to downtown, then the blue collar live near there or near the Campus, and many higher income live in the neighborhoods that have high-income, which are listed in "nice areas, which have predominantly white and white or some blue collar families.

Downtown is gross and scary, but nice shopping centers are Meadowwood Mall, the Summit is the nicest and the only Apple store in Northern Nevada, and the Scheels surrounded by Legends in Sparks is quite nice as well. The last two were built in the last decade.S'p is great, but other favorites are BJs, Capriottis, the Chart House, P. F. Changs, Pats, Red Hut, and many More. We just got a Five Guys and a Chipotle in December of 2013.Great! Though I never attended any of them, my school competed with them academically and in sports, and many of my college friends attended those schools and speak highly of them.High opportunity for singles, especially young ones. There are many people aged 18-30 either pre or post Grad living in Reno and attending University (about 20,000)
Noisetown comparison vs.Best hospitalTourist attractions
Downtown, plus the airport is in the middle of town, but otherwise surprisingly quiet.Compared to South Lake Tahoe, Reno is much bigger and has a wider range of Shopping. Tahoe is much nicer and has a lot more nature and tourist attractions. Reno can be a good place to make a career, especially in business, many businessmen, like my father, work out of Reno, because it is a good hub between Tahoe, Vegas, Sacramento, and Salt Lake. Saint Mary's Hospital, where I work, is renowned for Cardiology. The upside is that it is very cheap to live in Reno.Saint Mary's is nicer, but Reknown is cheaper and more accessible.Scheels, the Truckee river, Lake Tahoe, one of the many golf courses, the Summit. Virginia City not far away from town.
General comments
It is very fun and nice if you know where to go, but there are certainly places to avoid. The golfing is great, they have 5 or 6 nice golf courses. This town is great for small-town folk such as myself to get an education and experience a little city life outside my tiny valley. If considering attending UNR, DO IT! The campus is the nicest part of town and the University is super underrated.
