Steve reports in this review:
WeatherHow much crime? What are the neighborhoods like? What are the people like?
San Mateo has some of the best weather in the country. It has warm winters, in the 50's and 60's, and cool summers, in the 70's and 80's. It easily has the best weather in America. The only thing is that it can rain a lot in the winter and it is windy in the spring. Not a lot of violent crime but there are are certain neighborhoods, near the railroad, I would not live in or walk around in.You're never going to do well east of the railroad or, depending on where you go, east of El Camino Real. Generally, the farther up you go into the hills, the better. The people, a mix of caucasian and hispanic are ok. It's a blue color working class kind of city. You'll see homes with several cars including pickup trucks parked outside if you're on the flatland, and the richer people live in the hills.
Downtown AreaSingle lifeNoisetown comparison vs.
Crowded. All metered parking. Don't like it.Not that I observed. You'll hear the train horns nearly everywhere, but loudest if you're on the flatlands. Also, planes fly overhead every 5-10 minutes. Really. It's much nicer, and safer, than Redwood City; not as clean and nice as Foster City, not as wealthy as Burlingame.
General comments
It's just... there. Not bad, but not beautiful. The downtown area is a little crowded, difficult to find parking, and you nearly always have to pay for it.
