KATHY EDISS reports in this review:
WeatherHow much crime? What are the neighborhoods like? What are the people like?
Santee is just 18 miles from the Pacific ocean so the temperatures are mild, breezy and cool. Winters range from 50's to 70's and summers reach the low 90's. There is very little chance of flooding, snow or mudslides.Santee has one of the lowest crime rates in San Diego County. What crime there is, is mostly burglaries and assault. There is also theft of personal property. It is ironic that with the police very active to crime rate down, that there is the Los Colinas Detention Facility for Women located in Santee. One of the neighboring cities, National City has the highest crime rate in San Diego County.Santee is a suburban area where most of the homes are on acreage - average 1/2 acre to 5 acres. The homes are occupied by families averaging 3 children under 18 years old. Horses are one of the favorite hobbies and trails intersperse in some of the neighborhoods. The homes are above average and show pride of ownership. There are about 30% rentals in Santee, mainly apartments and condos. There is a small amount of assistance for low income buyers and the occupants are lower income, 3% black or mixed race.Santee is a family town where the majority of residences are well educated, 90% Caucasian, families with children under 18 years old. The parents are very active in the children's lives, sports and school. There is a small amount of singles but mostly divorced with children. It is a great area to raise a family and feel safe. The people are very friendly and family oriented. There is only a small percentage, 3% of Black and other races living in Santee.
Downtown AreaRestaurantsSchoolsSingle life
Santee has an outdoor mall, Trolley Square, which has a trolley that has several stops throughout town to transport shoppers to this mall. It offers coffee shops, smaller shops, and food court. There is also the Town Center which is much larger and offers bigger retail stores. Most of the restaurants in Santee are nice but a couple stand out. There is Bongiovanni Italian and Mandarian Diamond restaurants. The food is good and plentiful and the service is good. The public schools are known for Academic Excellence and meets or exceeds California standards. They provide parent workshops in math, language arts, tech and a program called Smarter Balance. This helps educate parents so they can help their children.Santee is more of a family town than 'hot spot' for singles. Although there are a few bars and night clubs, most singles would head to San Diego for better opportunity's to meet other singles.
Noisetown comparison vs.Best hospitalTourist attractions
Although Santee is rural, it does get some air noise from the San Deieo Airport, about 30 miles away.Santee is bordered by El Cajon and San Diego. Sam Diego is a major metropolis with many business, industry, airport, shops and freeways. It is a total different lifestyle than Santee. El Cajon is slightly bigger than Santee in population and it has smaller more condensed neighborhoods and more rentals. The income level and education is lower than Santee. There are miles of hiking trails also in Santee and golf. There is a local hospital, Edgemore, for emergencies but for major medical needs one would have to go to Scripps Hospital in Spring Valley, about 20 miles away. The Sportsplex is THE place to visit and hang-out. It has an outdoor theatre for musicals and plays, soccer and baseball fiends and picnic areas. There are also miles of trails to hike or bike.
General comments
Santee feels like a 'good 'ol town'. The people are friendly. The neighborhoods are well kept. There is a huge sports complex for baseball, soccer, picnics and golf. Children feel safe. It's only 18 miles from the beach and is connected by a direct route - Hwy 52 - so access is easy and quick. There is an outdoor theatre for plays and musicals put on by the local people. There is a lot of outdoors things to do but you don't feel like you are far away from the big city.
