Are you thinking of moving or relocating to Sebastopol, California? Would you like to know what the quality of life is like living in Sebastopol?
Kathryn reports in this review:
Weather | | How much crime? | | What are the neighborhoods like? | | What are the people like? | Summers in Sebastopol are absolutely gorgeous...and HOT! Temperatures hover around the mid 80s and 90s, so it's a good thing the coast isn't far away to cool off with a breeze!
Winters in Sebastopol are wet, and the early morning hours are cold, often with temperatures below freezing, so be sure to protect your plants! Fog is a normal occurrence during the cool mornings as well.
Fall is absolutely beautiful in Sebastopol. The leaves change, and the cool crisp air is clean and fresh! And Spring brings mild temperatures and beautiful blooms! | | In all my time as a resident of Sebastopol, the only crime I ever experienced was someone taking a dozen eggs from the stand I sold them from outside of my property without putting $5 in the lock box! It's the kind of place where you trust your neighbors, feel safe leaving your doors unlocked, and know that the community is as safe as it can be.
| | Sebastopol is fairly rural and sprawling. While crime is nearly nil for the entire town, there are a few "rougher" spots. Mostly near the downtown areas where out of towners migrate. The occasional DUI, disorderly conduct, and trespassing are more frequent in those neighborhoods. However, the downtown area is also home to the oh so famous junk art sculptures! Artist Patrick Amiot has created a sculpture garden on Florence Ave. near downtown that brings locals and tourists alike!
The best parts of town are the outskirts, with rolling hills, lush foliage, and beautiful vineyards rivaling those in Napa. Any day is a beautiful day for a drive among all that nature has to offer in this amazing location!
| | Sebastopol is best for hippies, plain and simple. It's occupants enjoy granola, eggs from their own chicken coups, and organic chai tea. They may not shower for a few days, and thy're fine with you knowing that. Hemp is not only consumed by those who favor Sebastopol, it's also used to make food and paper products. Sebastopol is for those who enjoy being natural in nature.
It's a place for hippies of all ages and races too! And don't let their dred locks and cut offs fool you, these people are educated. That's why they chose to live here!
City slickers and those who thrive in the fast lane will run out of Sebastopol with their Prada bag clutched in their arm!
| Downtown Area | | Restaurants | | Schools | | Single life | The downtown shopping area in Sebastopol is great! Especially if you are into local art and artisan goods. From paintings and crafts to locally made and natural soaps and body oils. | | El Coronal is hands down the best place for a carnitas taco! Or any taco! $5 total, and you're stuffed. Don't be scared by the fact that it's a sit down restaurant - this place is legit!
Sushi Tozai is super fresh, delicious, and great priced for your sushi cravings! They's got great happy hours and specials, but be sure to get there early, because it gets packed early! | | Sebastopol public schools are excellent! They are ranked high among local schools, and state competitors. Teachers are genuinely concerned about their students, which may come from the whole small town we look out for our people vibe.
The class sizes are small. The community also offers several free and low cost programs for kids from infant through high school. | | Sebastopol does not have a thriving night life. However, if you a re a gay or lesbian single, this is the spot for you. If you're more in the mood for a club or hip bar, head to Santa Rosa, or even Rhonert Park right down the road. It's home to Sonoma State University, so it naturally has more to keep the single youngsters happy! | Noise | | town comparison vs. | | Best hospital | | Tourist attractions | Perhaps the best thing about Sebastopol is the fact that the only noise you hear is nature. Owls, coyotes, birds, all of the beautiful sounds of the country. And of course, it's common place to be woken up by your neighbor's rooster, so don't b upset - just ask for some eggs!
If you're from the city, these sounds will most definitely be unusual to you, but sit back and enjoy, you'll get used to it! | | Sebastopol is ideally located between the bigger city of Santa Rosa, and the lazy beach town of Bodega Bay.
Santa Rosa, though not a major metropolis, makes Sebastopol look minuscule. Santa Rosa, given that it's more "inner city" is much cheaper than Sebastopol. It is also a lot more ethnic, housing a large population of Mexicans, many of whom work in the local fields and farms, and African Americans. Santa Rosa has more large big box stores and malls, but it does not have the quaint mom and pop locally made shops you find in Sebastopol.
Bodega is probably a close rival to the beauty of Sebastopol. If you enjoy a small town with rolling hills and green landscapes, you stay in Sebastopol. If breathtaking cliffs and rocky beach shores are your cup of tea, head to Bodega. It's a beach town for those willing to brave the red triangle and tempt the sharks.
Bodega is equally, if not more expensive to live in as Sebastopol. You pay for those ocean views. Most who live there live in bungalows, and are Caucasian.
| | Palm Drive Hospital is the closest ER and medical center in Sebastopol. It has what you need in an emergency, but it's not exactly state o the art, and the time I had to visit, I was treated with less than a sense of urgency, and walked away feeling as though I had burdened the staff. I would not recommend this hospital. | | The farmers market is an amazing find, as are the many apple orchards and fruit stands scattered throughout town. Be sure to stroll through down town to take a look at the quality shops and boutiques. If you're into collectibles and antiques, be sure to stop in at the shops along the main road into town.
And of course, if you're up for some exercise, take some time to ride your bike along the extensive bike trails that run from Sebastopol all the way into Santa Rosa and beyond. | General comments | | | | | | | Sebastopol feels like the country version of Berkeley. It's got that slow country feel that draws so many, but with an educated air.
Sebastopol feels like a small town that doesn't want to grow big, and its citizens will fight to keep it that way.
Sebastopol feels natural, clean, and healthy. Like the food you consume there, whether you got it at the grocery store, the farmers market, or the local cafe, just must be organic because it's being sold in Sebastopol! | | | | | | |
