Khadi Johnson reports in this review:
WeatherHow much crime? What are the neighborhoods like? What are the people like?
The weather here is hot and humid during the summer. There are days when you feel like you can't breathe. Luckily these are mostly in the month of July and August. In the fall, the weather is mild to cold but pleasant. There is nothing better than going out to see the beautiful leaves changing colors and wearing a sweater for comfort. In the winter, you can count on snow, not a whole lot but enough to know it's winter time. You can get away without gloves on plenty of days but if you wear them you will feel like it is fall instead of winter. Springtime here is mild and lovely. There is plenty of pollen during late March to early April, so if you have allergies watch out. What a safe place to live and work. You can walk around safely and feel that people are generally occupied with their own busy lives to bother you. No loitering or homeless hanging out on corners. The only crime I've heard about are the casual property theft and this does not happen often. If you are in Silver Spring, you can bet you're safe day or night. The best neighborhoods here are in downtown Silver Spring near Discovery Communications and the mall. There are plenty of new developments here from apartments and condos to town homes and single family homes. The class that lives here is middle class and some upper middle class. Lots of working professionals from every background, Black, White, Latino and Chinese. This is a very diverse area. The worst area to live in is at the far end of Silver Spring near Aspen Hill simply because it so far from the city and downtown. It is much cheaper though and fairly safe too if you are looking to save and be out of the lime light. The people here are extremely friendly. Lots of yuppies, liberals, and professionals in general. It is truly a place where smiles are the norm. If you have a family there is plenty to do. There is ice skating, movie theaters and more. If you are single there are plenty of restaurants and happy hours.
Downtown AreaRestaurantsSchoolsSingle life
Downtown Silver Spring is phenomenal for shopping. There is a mall where there are all kinds of stores from sporting to evening wear. There is a Whole Foods market with plenty of parking, American Apparel on the corner of Colesville Road and Fenton Street and H & M on Ellsworth Drive. There is also an Ann Taylor Loft and Men's Wearhouse, truly something for everyone. The best restaurants here are Oriental East for authentic Chinese, Silver Thai, Peruvian chicken, Negril Caribbean, Cameron's Seafood, Armand's Chicago Pizzeria, Subway, Ethiopian cuisine and Greek food. Whatever you want, Silver Spring has it.Schools here are great. Montgomery county is one of the best places to attend school in Maryland and schools in Silver Spring are well attended and the general population does pretty well. Schools here are safe and challenging for students. There is also a gifted and talented program, French and Spanish immersion and other specialized concentrations including International Baccalaureate.Great opportunities for singles because there are lots of businesses and corporations here where people work. The federal government is also here and many business cater to this working population. There are plenty of happy hours for singles, art shows, cultural expos, concert venue, meet-ups, theaters and more. The YMCA is here and other sports clubs where singles are likely to be, in addition to coffee shops, pool halls and bars.
Noisetown comparison vs.Best hospitalTourist attractions
There is a railroad that comes through Silver Spring but it is not noisy like in other places. I've only heard the whistle late at night. During the daytime, the train carries coal daily from West Virginia, so if you like train watching you can see it from the many platforms around town. This town is not as high strung as D.C. but it is not quite as low key as Baltimore. I would say it is in the middle, being more similar to Berkley, CA. There is a lot of diversity here so you can definitely find the kind of community you are looking for.The best hospital in this region is Holy Cross. This hospital has many specialists who are top notch in their field. Many doctors and nurses compete for positions at this hospital. The staff are friendly, astute at what they do and reliable. The hospital and community surrounding it are safe and clean. The best places to visit here are Discovery Chanel Communications, the ice rink, pottery making store, live concerts in downtown on Ellsworth Drive, state of the art movie theater, farmer's market on Saturday's in downtown and outdoor park on Cameron Street. You will love this town
General comments
This town feels easy and safe. The people are pleasant and if you need help, just ask. People are friendly and will go out of their way to help. If feels like a mix between hippy-laid-back and sophisticated.
