Julie Segraves reports in this review:
WeatherHow much crime? What are the neighborhoods like? What are the people like?
The weather in Skokie mirrors the weather in the city of Chicago. The temperature varies from Chicago by very little. It is about 2 degrees higher in the summer and 2 degrees lower in the winter. Skokie occasionally is affected by lake effect snow.Though crime happens everywhere, Skokie is a relatively safe suburb of Chicago. Residents don't worry about crime as they do in the city of Chicago. There are no open air drug markets, as the people in Skokie won't tolerate it.The northeast end of Skokie suffers from the most crime, but that is likely due to its proximity to Old Orchard Shopping Center. When the Oakton CTA station opened, there was a slight rise in crime but that seems to have been brought under control by the Skokie Police Department.Skokie has a diverse population of people. They are friendly. Neighbors talk to one another and will help you out if needed, for example if you are shoveling your car out from a snowstorm.

The downtown area is walkable with many small businesses and restaurants. Nearby is the Old Orchard Shopping Center which is a major mall of of the north suburbs of Chicago. On the south end of the suburb is the Village Crossing shopping center and also a Walmart across the street.Skokie has many restaurants including Maggiano's, The Cheesecake Factory, Village Inn for pizza, Portillo's for great beef sandwiches, Buffalo Wild Wings, Chipotle Mexican Grill and many others. The public schools are highly rated. There are rarely reports of problems at the schools. Many of the children use buses to get to school.Skokie has no nightclubs, per se, but they do have restaurants with bars that are widely used.

If yo live near the expressway, you can expect to hear the news helicopters during rush hour, or if there is a major accident on the Edens Expressway.Skokie is the home to Northshore Skokie Hospital. The Emily Woods Nature Center is beautiful and has many programs for children through adults. It has the feeling of a small village. People smile and wave at one another. There are numerous small businesses, which the resident support. It is a pleasant, stress-free place to live. The village itself provides serves not available in other suburbs, such as plowing the sidewalks after it snows.
