Life in South Fallsburg, New York

South Fallsburg Reviews New York Message Board
City/State
Are you thinking of moving or relocating to South Fallsburg, New York? Would you like to know what the quality of life is like living in South Fallsburg?
Travis reports in this review:
WeatherHow much crime? What are the neighborhoods like? What are the people like?
Summers are usually beautiful - temperatures not TOO hot and fairly low humidity! Always a nice breeze up in the pasture.

Winter.. Generally, fair amounts of snow and ice. Remember those nice breezes I mentioned above? Couple that with the snow and ice and you've got high, crazy drifts and wind chill values that makes single digits feel like negative numbers.   We were THRILLED to see "freezing" this past winter! Hail happens, and rain happens quite a bit. The rarer and more extreme weather doesn't happen here. Tornadoes, Earthquakes, etc. aren't an issue.
In my town, there's not as much crime as in neighboring, larger areas of Monticello (where there's actually been some shootings and a good deal of drug related crime, burglary, etc.).

I think there may some petty break ins or drug related arrests but nothing I've directly experienced. I did experience, though, at my job some vandalism in the way of graffiti on buildings and agency vans and a few years back, cut gas lines on the van. Nothing larger than that in my town though.
South Fallsburg is a small enough town to not really have 'neighborhoods' - It has hamlets such as Fallsburg and Hurleyville, though.

I think the outskirts of town where it's more rural is generally one of the 'better' parts of town. Also Columbia Drive in town seems to be more of a neighborhood feel.

There are also some relatively new, low-income subsidized apartments in town where police are seen from time to time. Also the area on Main Street at the bottom of Columbia Hill seems to be a bit seedier. I think the differences are more socio-economic and 'class' based rather than racially based.

You'll generally see the better parts of town out in the country though. Beautiful farms and pastures outside the main town.
I think in general, there's a pretty good cross section of all of the above and all would fit in.. In different places.

Mind you no races or segments/groups of people will really get in the way or bother another group of people. There's no real hate crimes in the town, but there are segments where specific groups seem to hang out and one of them like mentioned in my Better and Worse parts of town is that the WASPs will generally stay outside the town and go elsewhere for their food shopping and won't really participate in town-events; but there aren't many of them to speak of.

There really isn't much in the way of cute shops in the town. There are a couple convenience stores and maybe a deli but there really isn't much besides that. The town is pretty much dead as far as shopping and social life is concerned.Frankie & Johnnie's is the best restaurant in town but there are plenty of different places in the surrounding areas to eat from, as well as chain restaurants, but this is the best place within the town to eat.My local school district is the Monticello Central School District.   Not having any children in school, I can only go on hearsay about the quality of the school, although I know several faculty members. Overall, Monticello has a pretty good reputation scholastically. Their music program is very good and I know they put on quite good student plays. Not really. There isn't much life during the winter as it's much more of a summer town and so usually families will come up. The people who do live here year round are usually older, married, and not interested in starting up a single's club!
Noisetown comparison vs.Best hospitalTourist attractions
There really aren't. If you live in an apartment complex then possibly your neighbors will be too loud (especially in the bad parts of town) but there are no exemplary places where it's just way too loud or overbearing.I think I covered the Monticello comparison earlier - to me, Hurleyville is a far better place than South Fallsburg because it's much more rural and safe.

Some folks refer to Monticello as "Montighetto" because there are several areas within the Village that are very run down and where crime and drugs run rampant. South Fallsburg, for the record, is much better than this place too.

BETHEL, on the other hand is another neighboring town where there's a lot of upscale homes, Bethel Woods Arts and Cultural Center, many restaurants. Down side of that is property taxes and costs - so I'd still rather be in South Fallsburg!
Catskill Regional Medical Center.   Not a fantastic reputation - I was an inpatient there once, a few years ago, and found the treatment to be quite good.   Have had a couple of ER visits in recent years that weren't the best though. Treated badly, impatient staff, etc.Sullivan County Museum right in town. RIVOLI Theatre in the town as well is great to go to for live shows! Also it's a movie theater when there aren't live shows happening.

Down the road there is Bethel Woods for live concerts!

Big Woods Road is a great road if you have an All Terrain Vehicle because it is a beautiful country road.
General comments
It feels like home, honestly. There's just a sense of community in this place even though it's farther spread apart and there is just a feeling of being exactly where you need to be when you walk through the town, or through the pastures. There are of course worse areas of the town that people won't necessarily want to walk in (see my other posts) but in general there are some gorgeous old buildings, a nice stream that crosses underneath the street that has a cool bridge to stand on and look over it, and a general feeling of peace.
