Weather | | How much crime? | | What are the neighborhoods like? | | What are the people like? |
Stone Mountain has hot summers usually consisting of upper 90 degree weather. During the winter it's amazing to live here as winter is not as long and temperatures are mild floating around the 40's. Humidity is also really high in the city and can often times be seen reaching 90-100% in some areas. A lot of rainfall tends to come down during the spring and ends up creating lakes that dry up late into the summer. Those lakes tend to be a great for fishing and brings in a lot of income. Stone mountain does not see extreme weather and from what I can see there has never been a constant history of extreme weather. | | The metro ATL area is known to be one of the toughest places to live in when it comes to crime. Stone Mountain is a little better than average as compared to other surrounding cities around ATL. Because of the Park, the area is more inclined to keep the city safe. However crime does occur here and I wouldn't recommend living here. I had a friend in high school who lived there for a couple of years and had gotten raped. I also hear of a lot of violent assaults that occur around outskirts of town. Visit during the day to see the park, and leave or stay indoors at night. | | The subdivisions closest to Stone Mountain Park are your best bet for a safe and reasonable place to live in. Homes here are not as expensive, but have the luxury of being in a nice and safe area. Anything else remotely close or off Shepard road is where you need to avoid. Homes are weary and broken down in this area. Mostly African American populated, and a product of high crime. You can see a big split divide within SM as Caucasians are closer to the park. | | Stone Mountain is under-developed, and not very educated. Most people are stuck her not by choice and have to live her for a couple of years. You will not fit if you're looking to start a family, or a young professional. African American populated and if you were black you would have better success here. The people aren't as friendly as they would be in a city like Savannah or Augusta. When I go through stone mountain I see a lot of people who aren't driven and work at the park. I don't see a thriving community looking to expand and get better. Again the population is mostly white, however African Americans clearly run a lot of small business and are more prominent in influence. |
Downtown Area | | Restaurants | | Schools | | Single life |
Downtown is not that special and is bland. Many consider the park to be the downtown of Stone mountain. The shops are plain and not the most interesting. It is however a good place to sit down and drink coffee. | | Hooya's is a Somali mom-and-pop restraint that is a popular one with people who are familiar with the culture. They offer an abundance of cultural African food that has caught the eyes of other people coming in through the city. | | Stone Mountains public schools aren't as great as others, and a lot of people drive out to other schools like shamrock that are not in their district. | | Minimal opportunity for singles. Even though it's close to Atlanta, a lot of the singles stay in the city so I don't personally think it's a big "single" area. |
Noise | | town comparison vs. | | Best hospital | | Tourist attractions |
Stone Mountain is another underlying town of many that is close to ATL international airport. You can hear the heavy airplane traffic throughout the day. It's one of those things you can't avoid when living there. Another source of noise is Stone Mountains national park. Hundreds of people visit this park everyday and you can hear it from the subdivisions. | | Decatur and Atlanta are the two closest metro areas to Stone Mountain. Decatur is a bigger area and with that comes more opportunity. There are more jobs here but the crime rate is higher. Atlanta beats them all with being one of the most developed cities in the United States. Hundreds of places to shop in Atlanta and the cost of living is a little higher, but you do get a lot of the benefits that come with living in such a big metropolitan area. | | Dekalb medical center is the closest local hospital. It houses many medical students from Emory university which is one of the best medical schools I'm the country. The care is excellent, and if not Atlanta's medical center is close to which houses some of the best medical technology In the world. | | Stone mountain itself is one of the places you have to visit when you come through. They hoist a magnificent laser show every night and it wows the crowd every-time. The golf resort is also a great place to golf with friends and family. |
General comments | | | | | | |
Stone Mountain is a good place to visit for a day, I consider it not a place for most to live in . Not an impressive place to raise kids, or to live near when going to college. I would like to give this town a chance but I don't see much blossoming hope for SM. They need to improve the shopping options, limit crime, and create a better astethic appeal. Stone Mountain is not your typical small town and shouldn't have that high of expectations. | | | | | | |
