Life in West Valley City, Utah

West Valley City Reviews Utah Message Board
City/State
Are you thinking of moving or relocating to West Valley City, Utah? Would you like to know what the quality of life is like living in West Valley City?
Donald Ramsey reports in this review:
WeatherHow much crime? What are the neighborhoods like? What are the people like?
The city experiences four distinct seasons, where both winter and summer are long, characterized with hot and dry summers, snowy winters, spring and fall being brief and unusually comfortable transition. West valley city has an average daily temperature of 29F during winter (January) and 77F summer (JULY), with a very high precipitation rate of about 16.5 inches of precipitation across the year.
The town also faces pacific storms and move along with jet streams. Particularly, cold storms bring snow as early as September. Thunderstorms and monsoon moisture are mostly felt but are rarely severe, not forgetting remnants of tropical cyclones which once made its way into the city.
West valley city has a high rate of property crime and violent crime in the region as compared to her sister cities. Cases of city parties turning to be riots are rampant and I experienced a rowdy one that took police from multiple agencies to quell an early Sunday riots by revelers. Cases of public safety on snowmobilers getting hurt and falling off over drop-offs are common. One of the residents was shot dead in a drive by in west valley, although you might never know where crime will erupt in this city as it is widespread. You may want to keep close attention to your driving there since the police department got consumed with the united police department (a private corporation). Possibly a lot of people carry fire arms in the city especially residents of Herriman, Magna, Midvale, Millcreek, Riverton and the unincorporated areas of West Valley County. West Valley makes it easy for law abiding citizens to carry self-defense weapons.

The housing in the city is mostly apartments managed by the US department of housing and urban development and hence has a low income housing tax especially at the Campell Court-West Permanent, Compass Villa-Lc Compass Villa and The Kelly Branson Apartments. There are several majestic meadows manufactured housing- communities such as the Pine Trailer Court, Western Mobile Estate and The Redwood Village.
The people are amazingly helpful, friendly, and ready to give direction and advice on routes. The city has one of the highest concentrations of households with a high number of non-families and singles. The Carrington College California students are well behaved; I guess because of the multicultural setup that they seem to really blend together. Ethics is the order in most of the offices and schools. The administration people are so friendly and willing to help out. You get to meet new people and make a lot of friends. The population is wide spread out, but you can't fail to notice quite a number of old folks walking with their pets, they are so courteous and knowledgeable. The city is a hive of young individuals and a favorable equal number of females to males, though you can notice quite a large portion of singles hanging around the park and leisure joints. It's a noble chance to the single, especially men who are generally fewer in number as compared to the large number of single ladies. I left there feeling pretty awesome!

The downtown area is well planned and developed, especially at the Fairbourne station where you will find the Civic Center with the city hall within, a court house and the library. It's also safe to shop here because we have the police headquarters. The Embassy Suites Hotel provides quality service you may not want to miss out, a plaza strategically built and moreover an efficient transit line at the end of the TRAX Green Line and a stop on the 3500 south max bus rapid transit line. The valley fair mall and maverick center are located as is I-215 nearby and can be an option when congestion and traffic has closed on the civic center.During my stay in West Valley City, I enjoyed my stay there especially at the Country Inn and Suites, I have stayed in far better hotels but its location is prime and just minutes away from the salt lake city airport. There are plenty of 5-star restaurants in this part of the city and you cannot fail to discover the Hollywood connection, an amusement park close by.The city lies entirely in the granite school district and you will realize that it has one of the highest concentration of elementary schools, junior high schools and a couple of high schools, with the best in the town being Granger and The Hunter. The city is moreover the host of the famous East Hollywood High Charter School of Film Education.I could recommend singles, couples and families to visit this city. There are several attraction sites; the community is welcoming, full and vibrant of nightlife, restaurants and shopping centers. For singles you cannot miss out meeting new partners at the city full of activity and amenities. There is a high ratio of single men to women especially between age 20-44, hence favoring the singles either visiting or residing in the city.
Noisetown comparison vs.Best hospitalTourist attractions
West valley city is generally on the same grid system with Salt Lake City and hence the SR-201 freeway line lies along the northern border and continues west into Magna as Expressway. Salt Lake City International Airport serves the town and transverses the center of the city serving the western and southern ends of the valley. The West Valley Intermodal Hub is serviced by Trax Light Rail and Max Bus Rapid transit lines. You will feel a constant source of uncomfortable noise when residing near these highways and rail lines.West Valley's population of unemployed is significantly higher than the average of the best cities to live in Utah. Considering the property crimes committed, its worse than the average cities in Utah in addition to the violent crimes committed I would prefer the sister cities like Salt Lake city and Magna. On the other hand, it has ample space for expansion and development and is not so congested as compared to the neighboring towns.
However, the cost of living is surprisingly pocket friendly, the housing rates are low, land is favorably cheap and there is available space for development.
I got the best care and attention during my stay at the salt lake regional hospital and medical center. You find staffs who really love to be there and what they do. You never get to worry about getting a call back or being treated rudely. Their cafeteria is superb, and I can't blame the many who go there for lunch; great food, great variety and even better price. I have only had one experience with the emergency department when I was having a rather urgent problem; the staffs were super fast and kind. All in all, it is a great hospital. If you have no medical complication, you go get some food!I personally found the maverick center and the Utah grizzlies of the ECHL entertaining. The town is also home to Utah cultural celebration center, the Stonebridge Golf Course are nice spots to visit for outdoor sports and activities. On the other end is the Westridge Golf Course, the Rocky Mountain Raceways for race tracks and cycling. For classy entertainment you may consider checking out the USANA Amphitheatre, The Valley Fair Mall and Hale Center Theatre.
General comments
Personally I found the town to be habitable, especially for one who seeks to have a long term stay in the city, an all seasoned town with average temperatures but few natural disasters enables for long term developments without worrying on the destructions by acts of nature as tornadoes. The apartments are affordable, the people friendly and more of a community-town makes adaptation rather easy during settlement.
The traffic is great, and cases of congestion are rare. The public transit is highly effective too especially to the casual workers and students by linking the various sections of residential areas with the city centre. This is one awesome destination to leisure seekers and sports persons due to the diverse entertainment centers and sports grounds respectively.
Crime rate is rather worrying and if you are more conscious of safety, this town may not be a safe haven for you. The widespread crime over the city makes it even hard to predict and avoid danger areas. My take on the city is make a visit, stop your worry on security and enjoy for what the city has to offer then leave, but making the city a home is not my advice.
