Are you thinking of moving or relocating to Willits, California? Would you like to know what the quality of life is like living in Willits?
Pearl Marill reports in this review:
Weather | | How much crime? | | What are the neighborhoods like? | | What are the people like? | Summer in Willits is extremely hot. It can get to be over 100 degrees during the day, but then cools down substantially at night. Winters are chilly and rainy and don't typically have much snow, unless you live in the surrounding mountain areas like Brooktrails, that have higher elevations. Then there may be snow, but not generally much. Willits weather is fairly mild compared to cities like New York and Chicago. | | Crime that occurs in Willits is primarily drug and alcohol related. Because the area is a part of the emerald triangle, the town subsists of many people who grow marijuana. Arrests for possession and distribution are common in Willits. Drunk driving is another crime that happens in Willits, as the option for alternative ways for fun are few for the Willits youth. | | Willits is a primarily white town. Brooktrails is a popular area to live, which is a more mountainous and secluded area up Sherwood Rd. at the Northern end of Main St. Houses in Brooktrails range from affordable wooded apartments to expansive artisanal mansions that have been crafted by local artists and architects. The Valley is another part of Willits that is popular for ranchers and people involved in agriculture and farming. These houses are old farmhouses, and tend to be on property that includes barns, horses, and other assets. The best parts of Willits also include Main Street which has a strip of restaurants and shops owned and operated by Willits locals. The neighborhoods surrounding Main st. are quaint and include houses that range from small to large, from basic to Victorian styles. Less desirable areas to live are the residential apartment complexes on the South end of town, behind the local Walgreens and Goodwill Store. | | The people in Willits are a unique combination of blue collar ranchers and laborers, hippies who grow pot, artists, and young people that move there to do sustainable farming and raise children. Willits is not a good place for singles to meet people, as most people are already married and have kids. Racially, Willits is not extremely diverse, and the population consists primarily of Caucasion and Hispanic folks. People with an interest in creating family, art, gardening, and small community living will fit in here. People looking for a culturally diverse town will not fit in here. | Downtown Area | | Restaurants | | Schools | | Single life | The downtown area/shopping is small but cute. There are two very popular clothing stores, that include Moon Lady, and Mazahar. Both are on the pricey side, but have very unique items. | | The top 3 restaurants in Willits are Adams, El Mexicano Restaurante, and Anna's, which has sushi and chinese food. | | The quality of the public schools is average. There are programs that used to bring the quality higher, such as the popular Peer Counseling Program, which provided students leadership, counseling, and performance opportunities, but these are being moved. | | Not much during the non-trim season. But many a trimmer has fallen in love with another during those infamous 3 fall months. | Noise | | town comparison vs. | | Best hospital | | Tourist attractions | Currently, CalTrans is building a bipass which is causing noise disturbance in the Valley area of Willits | | Willits is sandwiched between Ukiah and Laytonville. Ukiah has more arts, culture, shops and restaurants and is less rural. Laytonville is much smaller than Willits, and has very few shops in the town. Of the three places, Ukiah has more options for work, social events, and culture. Laytonville has practically nothing, containing a local grocery store called Geigers, the local bar called Wheels, a music venue called Boomers, and a few smatterings of other small stores. | | Howard Hospital is the Willits hospital and it has a good reputation. | | The downtown strip is cute to explore. The Russian River is also within 10 miles of Willits, off of Covelo Road, and many locals drive to the River to sunbathe, picnic, and lounge. There are many beautiful river spots, including Cable Rock, and Jacuzzi Beach. | General comments | | | | | | | Willits feels like a small town. People know one another by name, and the local ice-cream shops, clothing stores, and restaurants are run by people who have lived in the town for a substantial amount of time. Willits has a big seasonal population, and attracts thousands of artists, hippies, and wanderers around september through december to trim weed. | | | | | | |
