Weather | | How much crime? | | What are the neighborhoods like? | | What are the people like? |
Wilmington is known of being the ideal destination for visiting during the summer and spring. With a climate that favors the typical beach town. Extremely hot during June, and slightly above average during the other months. Temperatures range from 70-90s in the summer and 20s-50s in the winter. The state of NC did have a bit of a weather epidemic this calendar year with snow. Wilmington did get snow and ice on several occasions and shut down the city in a heartbeat. Hurricanes tend to be an issue, but is common with every coastal city on the southeast coast. There has not been a major Hurricane for 2 years. | | Although Wilmington has very nice areas, it is aware to know that crime is high. Drugs and gang violence have been prominent in the wilmington area since 2010. Many people have lost their lives to gang on gang crime. I've been approached and almost been robbed by gang members just trying to get back to the University. It can be rough sometimes, but there tend to be more good people in the city than bad. | | Campus Edge is a very interesting apartment complex that gets a lot of critics, and for the right reasons. Population demographic falls around poor individuals, of all nationalities and races. People usually refrain from hanging around that area that is right off Market Street. Carolina Cove and the new complex Progress 910 are two residential areas that are gated and safe. These areas are thriving with smart college students, and small families. Definitely an area I would want to be around. Super nice estates are located towards Wrightsville beach and the beach bars. These houses are privately owned and bought out by rich people. | | The people in Wilmington are usually to themselves, however everyone carries the beach bum lifestyle. You either have the well off individuals who are living there in retirement, or college students attending UNCW. No one is too busy in everyones lives so it's not as friendly as a norma small town. Wilmington is a solid mix of African American and White, with a lean towards White. |
Downtown Area | | Restaurants | | Schools | | Single life |
Downtown is one of the more classy places to shop. All the stores are fun and exciting to enter, even the jimmy johns across from the clubs and bars are filled with creative setups. There's a chocolate store called Kilwins that has the best chocolate in the business and people flock to that area of downtown. There's a sound right across from it leading to a battleship as well that attracts attention. All in all downtown is also what makes Wilmington great. | | Bluefish Grill and Dockside are Wilmington staples. Both seafood spots, many people enjoy the bar and dockside view of the pier and beach. Oceanic is the only restaurant on the actual pier, and is a tourist favorite. On the cheaper note, Flaming Amy's which is mexican spot that is popular is a cheap favorite. Great places to eat! | | The public school system is great, Laney and Hoggard are in the area. With the accompany of some small private schools the quality of education is great in the area. Kids with great academics come out of the school, and they don't seem to be as populated as the Raleigh and Mecklenburg areas. | | Great opportunity for singles, everyone is beautiful and dressed ready for the beach. In vice versa it is a great way to meet attractive young men and women. Hitting up the beach bars is a great way to meet a nice girl to take out on dates in the future. Not to mention the University on the outskirts, also a great way to meet people as well. |
Noise | | town comparison vs. | | Best hospital | | Tourist attractions |
There is a Airport in wilmington and that is always a cause for concern when it comes to flights. However the airport is small (one terminal) and activity is usually not that dramatic. About two-three planes leave per day. | | This town compares a lot to others that surround the area. Many could say SouthPort and Oak Island have similar feels to what Wilmington is all about. However no small town surf city cant compare to Wilmington because of the sheer size. Wilmington is big, and takes up a lot of area. | | Cape Fear Hospital is the best hospital out there. All the best surgeons and first responders come out of that hospital. I have seen with first hand experience the functionality of that hospital and I can say that New Hanover (competing hospital) is nothing compared to Cape Fear. | | Wrightsville beach, and Downtown are Wilmington's biggest strong suits. It's what brought up the culture of wilmington and are reasons why they came there. I would also visit the battleship area, the view is so nice and you can catch a little history about the city from checking it out. |
General comments | | | | | | |
Wilmington feels like you're classic beach bum city. People love to surf and lounge around. It's a lifestyle that many people enjoy, and one that I enjoyed when I was younger. I loved the city because you could always do something active and that's one of the first things that will impress you about the city. The activeness of the individuals (Running, frisbee, surfing, etc). | | | | | | |
