Winston Salem has your typical temperate climate. During the summer months you can feel the air typically being hot and humid. The spring and fall are when you see the weather most comfortable. Winter months aren't extreme, and Winston usually never gets snow or ice. So from Oct-Feb you'll see temps hit from the teens at some points to the upper 40's. During the summer stretch you will see temps in the high 80's. The presence of the mountains really helps as they produce a sort of barrier and protection from the extremely cold weather. | | A lot of people look at crime statistics in their views of relocating to a city like Winston Salem and others. One thing to note, is you shouldn't make your decisions based off that. The numbers are truly in-fluctuated and inflated. Much of the crime that takes place in Winston are drug related or domestic violence. Every city has your typical crimes, and to be involved in the more "extreme" crimes in Winston you really do have to go out of your way. You have a low chance of experiencing opportunistic crimes such as robbery or being stood up.
| | Parkway Plaza and Washington Park is probably your nicest and safest area in Winston. Filled with Caucasian and African american white-collar working middle class Americans, you can see that this area is one that is established. Homes are not expensive, but do have a new and modern look to them. Once you hit Cedar and Clemsonville Road you'll increase your chances of hitting an area were crime will occur. Houses are average and are not expensive at all, this area houses a lot of the African american population as well. | | Winston is an established area where you will see a lot of married couples with kids. High income couples is what you see the most here, with six figured salaries. If you don't come across someone who's in that stage you're either gonna meet a student attending WFU or a highly educated professional. This area is very much surrounded around education. You can't live here if you're looking to party and just lounge around. Winston Salem is definitely not your average college town, and I think that's what everyone get's confused about whenever they visit. |
Downtown Area | | Restaurants | | Schools | | Single life |
Downtown is booming and growing by the day. Earlier last year a lot of construction was being done, and now you can see the shape the area is taking. A couple of new bars where showing up and the rest was history. The shopping however is minimal here, don't get your hopes up. | | Fabian Resturant is extremely good to eat at, with excellent service. The Krispy Kreme factory is also here and people all over come and visit. | | Great public school system. Usually all the kids I see from Brunson are smart and intelligent, and the teachers are great. The private schools are great too.
| | We know it's a college town. However a lot of the young kids at WFU hang out on campus and just on the outskirts of it as well. You wont find many 20 year olds to chat with. It is a great place for older singles, as the night life is pretty decent. |
Noise | | town comparison vs. | | Best hospital | | Tourist attractions |
There is not much, during football season the stadium does get loud. | | Kernersville and Reidsville are the two closets area's to Winston I can think of that are even close of comparison. Reidsville is more of a smaller town that has a close-knit community. Because of this, they are usually more susceptible to not letting or welcoming others into the community. However it's such a cool town to visit, just because of all the old-looking stores they have. It definitely gives you a great look at NC history. Kernersville is more of a rural area that is currently experiencing a nice boost in economy with great new stores opening up. The cost of living is also great here, with affordable housing. I personally would live in Kernersville compared to WS and Reidsville. Sure I like the college scene atmosphere, but I'm out of college and I don't like seeing drunk kids roam downtown WS when I'm trying to have dinner. | | Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center is the local hospital in WS and is one that houses some great M.D's from the University. I would trust my life in the hands of the doctors there. | | Washington Park is a favorite in the area. Overall Winston is a out door person type of area. There are plenty of cool bike trails and paths to walk on as well. Visiting the Krispy Kreme factory is a must when visiting. This famous doughnut company was founded in Winston and is loved by many. |

Whenever I see Winston Salem I see a city that offers a great balance of being a huge area with key resources and still having that homey small-town feel. Downtown looks like it's booming, and I generally feel safe in this area. There's nothing I wouldn't disagree about raising children in WS. For what it's worth I think that it should be talked about more in the state of NC. Wake Forrest University puts a big stamp on the appeal of the area and I also wouldn't mind recommending a friend to attend or apply! It's your "better" college town. | | | | | | |
