Things get very hot in Bakersfield, with highs close in the high 90's and record temperatures above 110. The average low is from 39 to 70 degrees. The record lows are below freezing. Rainfall is only about 6.5 inches annually.Gang violence is on the rise in Bakersfield and has only risen since 2000. There are close to 6,000 crimes in Bakersfield with close to 30 of them being homicides. Recently a man was arrested for producing child pornography in Bakersfield.The nice neighborhoods in Bakersfield include Seven Oaks, a series of planned communities all with well manicured tree lined streets and a golf course. In northeast Bakersfield there is the quiet rural area of Rio Bravo. Allot of white and Asians live in these areas. Bakersfield's east side is filled primarily with Mexicans and African Americans, the farming part of the town is definitely the poorest part of Bakersfield.People are still very friendly in Bakersfield. The farming community still keeps this town close to it's small town roots. 37% of the population is white, 20% is Hispanic, 8% African American and 6% Asian.

The Valley Plaza Mall is great shopping destination in Bakersfield. It has a Macy's, Target, Reading Cinema and a Forever 21. The East Hills Mall has a Regency Theater and a Gamestop and is very popular.The best soul food restaurant in Bakersfield is J's Place. Moo Creamery is known for their ice cream and burgers. The best pizza in Bakersfield is located at Rusty's Pizza Parlor. Cope's Knotty Pine Cafe is another must stop spot for great food.Bakersfield is part of the largest school district in the state of California. With the motto "Where the child comes first" the public school system has a high number of graduates and also has several colleges for students who wish to move on.The singles scene is a little better for women than men. There seem to be allot more single men then women due to the amount of farmers in the area.

The 5 freeway is very noisy and those living around the area have become accustomed to the noise. Farming can be loud also but there are a lack of people in the area to be bothered by the noise.Bakersfield is exactly in between Los Angeles and Fresno, both are 110 miles away from the city. Bakersfield has quite a bit in common with Fresno but not much with Los Angeles. Bakersfield is an older farming community that is still close to it's roots. Bakersfield does have allot of chain's that make it feel like a big city.The best hospitals in Bakersfield are San Joaquin Community Hospital, Bakersfield Memorial Hospital, Sagebrush Medical Plaza and Mercy Southwest Hospital.Check out country musician Buck Owen's Crystal Palace and museum for a great experience. The Links is an amazing golf course open to the public. The Kern County Museum is a great stop if you want to learn about the history of the area.
General comments   
Bakersfield is a great little farming community. In Bakersfield you can still experience life the way it was in central California at the turn of the century. Even the downtown financial district doesn't have any buildings over 12 stories. This is a great city to explore and relax in.
