WeatherSafetyNeighborhoodsPeople
Henderson is placed just southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. The weather is pretty much the same as there... HOT! From basically March to October temps can soar up to 120' during the daytime, and the sun can turn your skin into a rock lobster in an hour or two. I lived in Las Vegas for 30 years and the highest I ever saw it get was 124'. As in Vegas, most people stay in their homes or air conditioned car whenever possible. The night time or after dusk is when people go out to water their scorched lawn, and during the night the grass turns green again. Summer could be stopped for a day when a torrential rainstorm passes through and floods all the major overpasses and streets. If it snows, just stay off the street. Even the busses have a hard time in the rainstorms. Summertime nights sometimes don't get under 100' during the summer.Henderson has a reasonably average crime rate because it is a different entity than Las Vegas. It lies about 10 miles from Las Vegas to the southeast and it free from the drama and show that is Las Vegas. Very few of the "want to be millionaires" (if they would have held onto their money) end up in Henderson because it lacks the appeal and "glitz" of the strip. Henderson has a quiet personality being so close to Vegas, and boasts several fine eating establishments without all the "hoop-la" and sparkly lights. It's more family orientated and personable. Their police force consists of 5 or 6 squad cars as compared to Vegas which has nearly 1000 cruisers. Crime happens in Henderson, but mostly small petty crimes, and the occasional exploding rocket fuel plant.Going south on Boulder Hwy South you have to travel about 5 miles after Tropicana Ave crosses Boulder Hwy you will see the Sam Boyd Silver Bowl on your left. 2 miles later continuing south you reach Henderson, NV It is the city built beside the city of lights. As you arrive in Henderson, the first things you see is two small casinos. After that, on the right you can see a line of industrial facilities approximately 1/4 of a mile long. On the other side of Boulder Hwy you start to see a few scattered businesses off the side of the road, and a few fast food spots or gas stations. once you come parallel with this manufacturing structure the road splits off to the right into "the downtown district". If you were to go that way, your first right takes you into those facilities. Interestingly enough, one of them happens to be "PEPCON". Yes that "PEPCON"...The people of Henderson are very polite and happy to help you if you need anything. They don't have the attitude that Vegas has. Everyone is nice and not worrying about whether they win of loose, but how hot it's gonna be today... There is a mixed variety of ethnic cultures all rolled into one average sized community. From almost every spot in Henderson you can see almost the entire city of Las Vegas, and watch it light up like a candle every night of the year. It is truly an amazing sight watching it come to life as the sun goes down nightly.
Downtown AreaRestaurantsSchoolsSingle life
There are a few nice antique shops, and small businesses in the downtown district. aside from there, there's mostly only fast food stops and a Walmart. Oh, and a Safeway and Albertson's. The downtown district revamped itself recently so it is a wonderful experience.By far the best restaurant in Henderson is Nick's Supper Club. Hands down... If you want the best 5 course steak dinner served perfectly perfect in every way, go there. For the money, it's reasonable (about $35 per person) and you'll thank me when you're done... There is also of course the regulars like Denny's, Sizzler and so on.Henderson is small enough of a community that the One High school, 2 middle schools, and 2 elementary schools provide a good learning environment for Kids. I went to Basic High School back in the 80's and have fond memories if my experiences there. They have a great indoor pool, and it was very easy to find my class rooms.Seeing as how Henderson is the southern gateway to Las Vegas, if you were looking for any kind of experience or entertainment, Vegas is only 10 minutes away on the freeway...And it never sleeps. So yes there is a lot of opportunities there.
NoiseCompared to other placesBest hospitalTourist attractions
There is quite a bit of air noise constantly from planes landing in Vegas (they fly in from the southeast over Henderson) and from the jets at Nellis A.F.B. There is also quite a bit of road noise from the freeway, but the have put up walls to help.Alot of other small Nevada towns rely tourism to survive. Gambling and legalized prostitution are everywhere, and are not prohibited anywhere except for Clark county (Las Vegas/Henderson Area). Anywhere else in the state, if you see a red light off the side of the road, if you feel lucky, (and have money) you just hit the jackpot. But pepole in Henderson don't take it personally at all. They are after all a family community. Most of the other small dots on the map have brothels as one of their main selling points like Parhump" which is 1 hour away from Vegas and one of the biggest brothels in the state.Henderson has 1 Hospital. Lake Meade Hospital and Radiology. It is a small hospital with all the newest features.   Henderson has a population of around 10,000 so a larger hospital if needed is in Vegas 10 minutes away. This one is an easy one... Vegas Baby... 10 minutes away. There is also a small attraction called "Old Vegas" where you can step into the old Nevada past and watch live gunfights with your family. And did I mention, only 10 minutes away...Vegas Baby!!! also about 30 minutes in the other direction is Hoover Damn.
General comments
Henderson as a whole is a nice little community just outside of "Sincity" that doesn't really involve itself with the majesty that is Vegas. It has the feel of a small community, almost like its big brother wasn't even leaving the night light on. It's not trying to compete with Vegas, it's just Henderson. That's all.
