Rick Ellis's review of Hoover Alabama
Are you thinking of moving or relocating to Hoover, Alabama? Would you like to know what the quality of life is like living in Hoover?
WeatherSafetyNeighborhoodsPeople
In some ways, Hoover has the kind of weather you would expect in the South. Mild winters and hot, humid summers. But it also has a surprising number of tornados and has even bit hit by two hurricanes in the past decade. For the most part, Hoover is a middle-class suburb with crime that tends to be mostly property related. But thanks to a growing Hispanic population and the stresses between cultures, there has been an increase of rowdiness and general misbeahavior. The eastern part of Hoover is considered to be the better part of twon. it's filled with new, large developments and is also the site of several new retail developments. The western part of Hoover is closer to Birmingham's border and is filled with older rental properties and a lot of tired stripmalls. Hoover has tried to improve the older part of town by changing some zoning regulations which would shut down some of the older apartment complexes. But so far they have not been successful.Hoover is a very upscale middle-class suburb. The population increased substantially in the 70s and 80s when white families looked for a place close to Birmingham that was less integrated. While Hoover isn't 100 percent white, it is primarily white and that can be a problem for potential residents looking for a more ethnically diverse town. There are a lot of upscale singles in the area, along with many young families that have just purchased their first home.

There really isn't a "downtown," but Hoover does have Riverchanse Galleria, one of the largest malls in the Southeast. The Hoover schools are the best in Alabama and some of the best in the South. There are a number of bars and clubs in Hoover, particularly near the mall.Birmingham is just to the north and it is a tired and nearly broke urban area that is the exact opposite of what you find in Hoover in nearly every way. Mountain View lies to the east and it is essentially a more upscale Hoover: bigger houses, fancier cars and lots of mansions.
General comments
To be blunt, it's a friendly but also very conservative, white town. When I lived there several years ago, a house down the street from me had a black-faced lawn jockey placed by the door. It's hard to imagine many places where that behavior would be tolerated, much less encouraged. While Hoover has a lot of likeable qualities, the race issue looms over everything.
